    Windows.old folder??

I just upgraded to W10 this past February, have gone through a couple updates already. Today I did the 2004 update, and now I have a 26 GB folder in my C:/ drive.

My main question is, can I delete this. Also, why did it create this, and more importantly, where can I go to find out exactly what else the update did to my system (other than MS's official page)?

Hi it creates windows.old so if you want to go back to the previous build if you are having no issues you can delete it if you want to get the space back.

It's got Program Files folders as well as the main Windows folder. Are you sure I can delete it?

Here's a good article about this (just ignore the part about going back to Windows 7 or 8, article's a few years old):

What is the Windows.old Folder and How Do You Delete It?

Let Windows decide and do it for you ...

    Open Windows/File explorer
Right click C:\ drive > Properties
Disk Cleanup > tick everything > OK
(might take a while if you haven't already done this)

    Then ....

    Open Windows/File explorer
Right click C:\ drive > Properties
Disk Cleanup > Clean up system files
    Tick everything > OK
(might take a while if you haven't already done this)

    Windows.old should be gone.

OK, thanks everyone. Doesn't seem like there's any files left in there I need to recover. Will delete and clean.

I do have some tweaks I did when I upgraded initially that don't seem to work or aren't present now, but I can hopefully just go back and start from scratch with each of them.

As I stated, I'm a new W10 user. All my friends who've had it for years don't seem to know what I'm complaining about, which makes me think I shouldn't have done this update at this time. Oh well, can't worry about it now. But I know privacy and freedom from unnecessary programs running are the things I was most concerned about when moving to 10.

I've looked over the list of issues the 2004 update has and luckily none of them affect me. Though I would like to know how to find out what kinds of "under the hood" types of changes are being made to my system with these.

Also, the Windows.old folder will automatically delete after about 10 days.
