My PC was ready for 2004 update, but now it isn't anymore.

Apparently nobody (that I've seen) is recently getting it thru Windows update, and all are getting the same message, or very similar. Nobody knows the exact reason in general or on their machine. MS may know, but isn't saying. Lots (millions) in the same boat.

Interesting. To test that I've just restored the 1909 Macrium image for one of my machines that was offered 2004 on the day it was released, 27th May. It successfully updated to 2004 through Windows Update and has been running 2004 without issue since then.

Today, after catching up on 1909 updates, Windows Update still says:
The next version of Windows is available with new features and security improvements. When you're ready for the update select "Download and install".

So it would appear MS haven't entirely pulled the plug, at least not for machines that MS think are compatible. It may well be that the list of such machines is shrinking, but it's not zero yet.

Yes, there are some who have updated test systems to see "What if", but they have the resources and backups to play with it. Normal everyday users should not even attempt it. It's a blessing millions don't even know it's there.

I have more than just the one machine so I'm in a position to test it - but then only on machines that have been offered 2004 through Windows Update (I'd never recommend forcing the install). TBH there's little that's significantly new in 2004. Just stick with 1909, there's no compelling reason to update any time soon.

I had a machine offered the update last Wednesday, as it happened it was taking longer than I could spare to update, so just cancelled the install, set the update to wait for 7 days and dropped the system off, as it was required urgently. Will hopefully get some news this coming week as to if the update is offered again

They persist in offering it on my PC and it repeatedly fails to complete.
I'm Definitely NOT Impressed. Windows 2004 will not install.

I wouldn't bother trying, as I said earlier: "...there's little that's significantly new in 2004. Just stick with 1909, there's no compelling reason to update any time soon".

That's exactly what I'm doing. Although I do have a little niggling concern that if they don't fix this update at some time then the next round may not install and I'm forced reluctantly into a clean install.

You've got until May 11, 2021 for them to sort it out. But by then it won't be 2004 that's current, 2009 is in the Insider Dev Channel (fast ring) and could be out some time this October. Maybe even the next 21H1 build that has not yet even made it to the Insiders.

...good to know that there is no urgent reason to install the new 2004! The 1909 (in my case) is working fine and stable after the clean instal of W10 therefore i will stay with the old build for a while!

I managed to safely and completely get it installed on one machine, my wife's 6 year old Surface Pro 3 lappy. You cannot tell the difference. Not causing any issues, so I left it.

But definitely not worth any heartaches to force it.

There are a number of small improvements, but you have to look close to spot them. The big change is due when 2009 is released, that's when Chromium Edge is due to replace the old Edge.

In 2004 a setting has been added to Windows security to allow turning on its PUA/PUP reputation based detection. No longer do you need a .reg file to do it.

Also, the WiFi icons now more sensibly make it clear which connections are secure. Previously they just had a rather ambiguous shield with an exclamation mark indicating the open connections, now all secure connections show a padlock.

A lot of small improvements do not add up to a compelling reason to update though, at least not until the 'Optimise/Defrag' bug for SSDs is resolved.

Actually, as mentioned on page 4, im on home windows 10, version 1909 and received the new Edge (through normal windows update) 2 weeks ago.
Kinda weird because i thought it would be a thing in version 2004.

Runs very well for those who wonder, very fast browsing and no more crappy youtube for that matter.
