Serious Updates Question

I have blocked every Win 10 Update for at least the last two months with the exception of Defender Updates and MS Office App updates. I read horror stories. I'm sure we all do. I could provide a list, but I think you likely know all the ones I am referring to.

Are there any updates not only safe but that I should install? Can I assume that there will be newer, fixed versions of what I have hidden so I should not concern myself with even the 2004 Feature Update?And where is the absolute best place to follow these updates?

Hi, you can read descriptions of each and every update per build in the News section here (at the top) with issues listed and user comments.

There are some known bugs in 2004 and some have reverted having tried it. See the News item for What's new in that- probably nothing you really need.

1909 introduced changes to Windows search which MS initially made a mess of, so you need that updated at least past that mess- MS has never reinstituted the blue highlighting of valid file explorer search syntax provided helpfully until 1909.

Thanks. Does any update ever get blessed as safe in news? AM I correct that once hidden I can forget an update as an updated update is inevitable?

I have always been cautious. I have always waited until most say issues are fixed. But now seems so different as every update seems to break multiple things.

Updates are a less serious matter to deal with than feature updates, as you'll know.

The best indication of a digital blessing is to see all issues listed designated as resolved- or none listed.

They can be uninstalled more readily, so I usually accept them.
I hold off on feature updates for a couple of reasons, and sometimes skip an entire build. First, let the flak settle until at least the first major update is out. Second, it takes a couple of months for one program I use to be updated for compatibility.

Example: 1909 was a readily uninstallable 'enablement' package which could be uninstalled like a CU. I tried that- very rapidly found file explorer search had been rendered useless, and uninstalled the 'update' from the control panel. Still with 1903 for now.

Lots of sites do reviews of updates when they are released, and stories when an update goes sideways.

We have always waited a while before installing updates, and have never been impacted by any snafus.

If it's a zero day patch, different story.

It's always a good idea to do frequent disk images, in case anything goes sideways (bad Windows update, bad Feature update, ransomware, drive failure).

Our systems are currently patched at 18363.904, and have no issues.

We are waiting a while as well before upgrading to 2004.

Thanks. Daily backups with Macrium, of course. The real questions are is there anything I have blocked that really is a must to install and while I read MANY reviews of the "sideways" rarely see a "home free all" that an update is now safe and desired. So came by to ask.

And what I have been doing is hiding the updates, not postponing if that makes a difference.

Right now blocked are:

KB4552931 .net update for 1909
Feature Update 2004

Now that is interesting as I KNOW I blocked at least 4 or more as well, but they are not showing! For examples:

KB4557957
KB4551762
KB4560960
KB4497165

I am now surprised that these are not showing in "show" from show and hide. I know i blocked them.

Only the latest cumulative update is ever shown in Windows Update. As each CU contains all the fixes from the previous one, any superseded CU is no longer seen, either by Windows Update or by wushowhide.diagcab.

Thanks. So can I assume the CU has all the same problems as those it has superseded? Like printer issue, SSD issue, storage space issue, spontaneous reboots, DISM, etc.? And is the .net update safe and needed?

When an update supercedes another, it usually means it fixed the issues the problematic update had.

Many in Ten Forums make free backup images.

Backup images allow end users to perform trial and error steps.

If there are problems the backup image is typically restored.

Backup images are useful in case of:

malware
ransomware
corruption of the operating system
corruption of the registry
corruption of the drive file system
failure to boot
unexpected drive failure
etc.

There are free and pay versions depending on the features.

(Acronis, Aoemi, EaseUS, Macrium, Paragon, etc.)
