New Microsoft Edge Browser WU - no choice?

Today on 2 PCs there was an Update to install the new MS Edge browser. Both systems on metered connection settings (soft setting - not registry edit), it downloaded and installed in the background - no warning.

Installed successfully on one PC, unsuccessful on the laptop. No surprise, I was doing network system settings changes when I went to restart and saw the message "configuring updates".

    Not impressed.

Hi, you have Pro; do you have updates set to Notify in Group Policy? That would mean you always have to approve Windows Updates. Hopefully that would catch this one.

(I think the plan was to deliver this via Windows Update).

    Hi
This machine is on Pro, the 2 machines in question are on Home.
This machine has not had it offered or sneak-installed, as the group policy is set.

In the article above its says: "The automatic Windows Update delivery of the new Edge will remove legacy Edge."
    Nope.
(Maybe it's just still in the start menu)

Where is it guaranteed that using metered connection will block updates?

    Nowhere! Obviously.

    What does Chromium based mean?
That it is a Google Chrome browser? Or something else like using chrome code?

For anyone interested in skipping this new feature there is a vaccine:

And if you are interested in trying it out (and continuing the endless browser wars), here is some info:

It is a "better" chrome browser, BTW.

Yet in post #1 you were clearly depending on it and 'Not impressed' that this was downloaded.

It's the inconsistency that gets to me.
Sometimes WU plays nice and sometimes not.

Here it is again on the same laptop that it tried to install itself on when I was doing Settings Changes.

    Now it will wait. OK.

That's where my complaint is. There are times you do not need updates to be happening and the lack of control is frustrating.
