    2004 Update Has New Message

After checking for the 2004 update for several weeks and getting the message that my computer was not ready for it and there was noting I needed to do at this time, I suddenly got a new message: "The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on its way. Once it’s ready for your device, you’ll see the update available on this page." I appreciate the clearer message and not having to worry that I should somehow be getting my computer ready for 2004. After reading posts on the update I will wait until the update comes to my computer normally because it will check to see if my computer is compatible.

My laptop is ready for it. And although I have a image backup, I am in no hurry and will give it another month or so before I get it. :)

OP: when the update message changed, did the message center display a notice, or did you actually have to open up WU to see it?

    - - - Updated - - -

Well, the WU message on my system changed today to: "The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on its way. Once it’s ready for your device, you’ll see the update available on this page." and no message in the Message Center. Guess that answers my question. I still have WU paused until 10/18/2020.

I used Windows Update to get the new message. I am not sure what the Message Center is. I know about the Notifications on the lower far right. I may delay updates also but I believe the 2004 update will require selecting it to download and install anyway. I have a question. When 2004 installs via WU there should be a stage that says "Preparing Your Computer" or something like that. I have seen it on earlier feature updates. Does this stage check for compatibility of drivers, etc with 2004?

It's at this stage that my PC maxes out at 57% and the update then rolls back at boot-up. So something is happening along those lines.

From what I have been able to determine, it probably depends on your pc manufacturer whether pc will ever be able to get Version 2004. I have a 2nd pc which is a Dell Inspiron 3847, and is 5 years old. Dell states the following at: https://www.dell.com/support/article...piron-DT-20H1U.

"Inspiron Desktop: The table below lists Dell Inspiron Desktop computers that have been tested for update to Windows 10 May 2020 Update. If your computer model is not listed, Dell is not testing the device, and drivers have not been updated for that model." My 3847 is NOT listed, so it apparently is not being tested, and will not get Version 2004. BTW I am now getting the same notification posted above by jamis in post #3.
