On Pausing Updates - and v2004 update

I was offered the Feature Update v2004 on my main PC a week or 2 back. I choose not to install it right now, so I paused updates until July.

Now I had recently read in the forum that the Feature updates will not automatically install unless you choose to do so.
So I figured- if that's the case then I'll turn updates back on so I can get the current 1909 updates and I will install the Feature Update when I choose.

But when I turned updates back on the Feature Update immediately began installing.
A quick shutdown and then reset the update pause and I'm OK.

Is this the way it is?
Is there any way to turn updates back on and keep the Feature Update from installing?

There have been reports of a bug in 'pause updates' that may start the Feature Update unasked for. I've not been able to reproduce it though. If you don't pause updates again and you should be safe....

Thanks Bree. That confirms it's not just me!
I can confirm for you that this is a thing. Consider it reproduced.
I did pause updates again. It was the only way to stop the installation.
There were other updates available too. Now, with this, they will have to wait.

I have another PC that got the "you are not worthy ready" message for 2004 and I paused that one too. I'm going to check to see what happens when I un-pause that one just to see.

So far I have had it offered on four machines, and clicked 'download and install' on three of them (2 Home, 1 Pro). The fourth (Pro) I'm holding back on updating. That one I have paused and resumed updates many times, most recently a couple of minutes ago. It found and downloaded a security intelligence update, but the 2004 Feature Update remains as an optional update, waiting for me to click 'download....'.

So if it is 'a thing', then it's not a common one. That seems borne out by Woody's article, he ends by asking for examples (presumably because he can't reproduce it either).

Do you know someone whos been upgraded without their permission? Id sure like to know the details....

    Interesting.
I'm wondering what kind of details I could offer. Screenshots? System specs? All of the above?

    Edit
This is what I posted on the Ask Woody board:

I was offered v2004 om May 29. Because I have preparations I need to find time to do before installing this Feature Update I set Pause updates to July 7.
This weekend I saw posts on WindowsTenForums saying that this Feature Update would not install automatically, that you had to choose to install the update before it would start. So I figured I'd stop pausing updates since I knew there was a CU KB4560960 available and I figured I could install it, without installing 2004.
Today I did the deed. The minute I hit "Resume Updates" the 2004 Feature update began downloading (even though I have my Network settings on Metered Connection, and Don't Download Updates on a Metered Connection set.)
I really can't install this thing right now so I immediately shut down and on startup reset WU to Pause Updates - this time to July 17.
So technically I did not have the 2004 Feature Update forced on me, but it would have if I let it go.

To test this further I took one on my Home machines that has been offered (and took) the Feature Update to 2004 back to it's 1909 Macrium image from early May. It was duly offered 2004 again, and started installing the June CU and other updates. At various time I paused and resumes updates, both while it was downloading/installing the CU and after it was completely up to date. I also tried a restart while paused.

At all times the 2004 update continued to be listed as optional with its 'download and install' link. So that's twice now, on two quite different machines (x86 Home and x64 Pro) that I haven't been able to reproduce it.

To match you, I then set a metered connection, paused, then resumed updates - still nothing.....

If you have a Macrium image from before this all started, then it would be interesting to see if you can reproduce it yourself. You don't need to actually restore it, you could run the image as a Hyper-V VM with Macrium's viBoot.

    I have Acronis images.
Over at Ask Woody another person running Pro had 2004 install without input. I thought that the Pro version might be the link, but since you tried it with Pro also that ends that hypothesis.

I can do more digging later, but this is my main office machine and I've got a couple of CAD projects to finish this week so I can't take the chance to play around with it. But I will report back anything else I find.

    Evidence!

One on of my systems, W10 Pro 64-bits1909, had similar experience as the OP. The 2004 was downloaded and asked when to install the feature update. Never was not a choice, so delayed it to mid-July.

I've deleted the downloaded 2004 files and disabled Windows update with WAU Manager. Checking for updates with WAU Managers does not show Windows updates. Removed the delay and immediately "Getting you system ready..." showed up again with the feature update. Back to mid-July delay again...

And over at Ask Woody, more people are showing up and testifying that this happens with their Pro versions.

Do you mean 2004 was downloaded automatically? I use Home 1903, and 1909 has never been downloaded.

I have never used the "Pause updates" option.
