W10 update killed my Brother printer

W10 version 10.0.18362

A recent W10 update (the actual update number isn't available) knocked out my trusty Brother HL 4070cdw printer.

All W10 debug attempts, Brother printer settings, wifi and router settings to determine the trouble reported OK e.g. installed, working, ready etc. But my printer wouldn't 'budge'. After hours and hours of frustration and getting nowhere, I resorted to removing the latest W10 update (I can't see the actual update number because I removed the update!). As of June 13, 2020, it was the latest update.

Wala. my printer is back.

I hope this might save others of hours and hours of fruitless debug time.

Printer problems have just been added as a known issue for the June 9th cumulative updates, it's KB4560960 for your version 1903. You have tried uninstalling the KB4560960 update which seems to have been successful.

If you have Pro you should now defer or pause updates, for Home you can pause updates. In both you can hide this update.

Doubt it was KB4560960 because that update


is still installed. I think the one I uninstalled was dated 6/12/20

KB4560960 was issued on 06/09/20, there have been no new updates since then. It's quite possible that your Windows Update didn't get round to installing it until 3 days later.

Where do you see that it's installed? If you are looking in 'Windows Update > View update history' then it will still show the date it was installed, even after you removed it. For the actual list of what is currently installed you need to click 'uninstall updates' in that 'view update history' page.

Thanks Bree, you're correct. It WAS KB4560960! I've very little experience using W10's 'Update' tool.

Am I correct that you can't permanently stop W10 updates i.e. not having to put 'delay' dates for automatic updates ?

Is MSoft essentially forcing these updates on us?

Your specs say you have Home. In Home there is the option to pause updates for up to 35 days. Pro has more control, but even there you would end up getting the cumulative update after a month. However, a month from now there will be a new cumulative update which should (we hope) contain a fix for this printer problem.

In both Home and Pro you can use a Microsoft provided tool to hide a troublesome update like this KB4560960, this is probably your best course of action.
