Windows update will not run

Windows 10, Version 1809 (build 17763.168)

The machine is a smallish, Asus notebook. I has run fine for around nine months, but the other day (after not having been used for a couple of weeks), when I powered it on, it failed to boot. After a number of attempts, I finally got it to boot via Startup Repair. Needless to say, several days later, I had the same problem, but the booting issue now seems to be resolved.

It occurred to me that part of the problem could be out of date software, so I tried both Control Panel->Windows Update and Settings->Update and Security. In both cases, the update window appeared and then went way within a second. Bottom line, I have no idea how to check for updates.

Question: How do you suggest that I resolve this issue so that I can check for updates? Any other suggestions are welcome as are requests for more data.

Before you proceed trying to update I'd run an SFC.


The idea is that you're making everything ship shape first.

Use SFC Scannow to Repair Windows System Files

Run SFC Command in Windows 10 (go to Option 3)

I tried sfc /scannow yesterday and got the following message:

The LOG file is only (joke) 16 MB is size - what should I do?

methinks updating to windows 10 1909 or the new 2004 version for your notebook should be needed, if there's any problems sfc or dism cant fix, the repair upgrade certainly will

For now, use techbench to download a 1909 iso via windows (final), windows 1909, windows, english, and depending on how much ram your notebook has, the 32 bit iso, or the 64 bit iso. I'd say then to do more stuff, but for the record, how much RAM and storage does your asus notebook have, need to know if it can take an upgrade/repair install
