Can't install Cumulative Updates for v1909

So, I've been unable to install Cumulative Updates for v1909. It completes downloading, runs a for a while and then fails with error 0x8e5e03fa. I've not had problems installing feature updates or cumulative updates for previous builds. I'm open to suggestions. I'm also wondering if I can just manually install/upgrade to build 2004 to get past this when it becomes available?

Wouldn't recommend that, there are still some initial bugs to iron out in 2004 (minor ones, but bugs all the same).

For the update problem, try the Windows Update Troubleshooter first. If that fails, you could reset windows update using this tutorial.

Thanks for the link. I tried creating that batch file from instructions on a different site, but it didn't work. I'll download it and try the "reset" again.

So I ran the batch file to reset Windows Update and tried to install

    "2020-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4556799)"

and it failed again with error code 0x800f0988

You didn't say if you tried Bree's advice "For the update problem, try the Windows Update Troubleshooter first"? In order to be clear can you confirm if you did try it and if it worked? We can then discount it if it didn't work.

I just ran the troubleshooter for a second time. It found and fixed a couple of things and then said to retry the update which I did. It failed again with this message:

    "2020-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4560960) - Error 0x800f0988"

Hi, you could try Tweaking.com's free repair tool (Google); selecting only the relevant repair (Windows Update).
It's cautious- observe the preparatory stages. It has helped some.

You could try an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data - tutorial available- you'll need an iso file for build 1909 (freely downloadable).

I didn't think of the Tweaking.com tool. I already have that installed. I'll give it a try next.

Ran the Tweaking.com Windows Repair to specifically fix Windows Updates. After rebooting back to normal mode I ran the Cumulative Update for v1900. It failed again:

Manual download links follow the main tutorial:
    KB4560960 CU Win 10 v1903 build 18362.900 and v1909 build 18363.900

Have a look at your update logs:

I was having a different error than you, but still could not get any updates to work without failing after download - whether through Windows Update or downloading from the Catalog and doing it locally. After trying many people's lists of how to reset Windows Update, I finally did the Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade Installation & Upgrade by Shawn Brink. Other than going in and turning off Defender and the Firewall just in case to speed things up when it was "Getting Ready" (this step took about 2 hours for me), this worked flawlessly. I went from a busted 19041.264, to a repaired 19041.84. I was then able to go into Windows Update, and about five updates installed perfectly including the May and June cumulative updates. Just a suggestion if you run out of ideas, I had!
