7 pro to 10 pro possible upgrade?

    Hello all!

Hopefully last post/question before I actually get my new 10 system up and running (Monday!). This just dawned on me right now.

My computer that is on the verge of death, and being replaced is Win7 Pro (x64). The system I've purchased to replace it comes pre-installed with 10 Home. Is there a way to transfer the existing 7 pro license to the new machine, so I can upgrade the new one to 10 Pro, instead of Home? And, honestly, is there any major benefit of doing so, even if it is possible? The machines will not be "sharing" the license, as as soon as the new one is up, this old one will be spare parts. . .

    Thanks as always,

    your friendly neighborhood Zoloft

Is your 7 Pro license OEM or Retail? Only retail licenses are transferrable.

If it's eligible, you can do this:
Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First

    Compare Windows 10 Editions
    - includes comparison list

Note that Pro has group policy, Home doesn't, allowing a degree of control Home hasn't. However that gap has narrowed.

Users can also use one of the free programs designed to provide full control of Windows Update and replace it.

Want a virtual machine? Pro provides Hypervisor, but you can get Virtual Box for free.

    Privacy? Only Pro offers Bitlocker.

On the old system, retrieve the Windows 7 Pro product key with showkeyplus:
    ShowKeyPlus

Also look on the old computer for a Windows 7 COA sticker with a product key printed on it. That would be the first product key to try.

Then on the new computer coming with Windows 10 Home:
    1. Make a backup image of your Windows 10 Home - once the OS is upgraded to Pro, it's very difficult to downgrade back to Home. If Pro does not activate you will want to restore your backup image or do a clean reinstall of Home.
    2. Upgrade 10 Home to Pro:
    a. Disconnect the computer from the internet.
    b. Go to the Activation screen in settings, click on the link to Change Product Key, and enter the generic Windows 10 Pro product key to do the upgrade to Pro: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T. If you are connected to the internet when you attempt this, it will fail.
    3. Connect to the internet again.
    4. Attempt to activate the Windows 10 Pro with the Windows 7 Pro product keys.
