    Windows 10 1909 Update

Hi I have a MSI GS43VR 6RE Phantom Pro notebook, I recently tried to install the Xbox app to play games through the ultimate game pass, but it says I need to update to the latest windows update 1909 (im running win 10 1809) which I have tried lots times it all downloads then installs then when it says it need to restart I do it then it gets stuck on the MSI logo I have left it for 12 hours to see if it does anything but it doesn't, the only way to get it back on is to turn off the laptop then back on but now it wont even just Restart not even when doing an update, am not great with this sort of thing so any help is really appreciated.

Hi, you have build 1809 now- are Windows updates failing? Or is Windows update working, but you've never been offered a feature update first (in time) to 1903 or now to 1909?

(If you look at your Update History in Settings, do you see any update failures?).

If you haven't been offered a feature update, and Windows Update is working, that tends to indicate MS doesn't believe your laptop to be compatible with it. See example FYI demonstrating this:
Two problems, Cannot upgrade to Windows 10(1903) and error w. Intel driver

How old is your laptop? It appears to be from around 2016/17- is that correct?

Diagnosing upgrade failures usually leads to threads extending over several days and without success. Be warned.
    Occasionally people are lucky.

It seems you don't get an error message.

Basic prepartory steps for an upgrade:
    a. Do you have >30Gb free on C: ?
    b. Disable/uninstall any 3rd party security software
    c. Disconnect any unnecessary peripherals

    Checks:
    a. Check your disk - HDTune v2.55 free (Health and Error scan tabs)
    b. Check your file system - run
    chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command or Powershell prompt
    c. Similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW

Post a screenshot of your partitions using a 3rd party tool e.g. Minitool Partition Wizard - not Disk Management.
To post a screenshot use the icon above your post 'Insert Image'

    If the above pass:
Create a disk image before attempting the upgrade. (The routine use of disk imaging to help you recover quickly from disaster is recommended tirelessly here E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) - image files to large enough external storage.

Try downloading an iso for 1909 (use MS media creation tool) - to somewhere other than C:
Rt click the iso file, click Mount
Open the new drive letter created
Disconnect the internet, double click setup.exe to start
Choose not to accept updates during this when prompted.

There is a chance this might work for you- and a chance it won't.

Also make sure your BIOS is up to date.

If it doesn't, Google setup.diag.exe (from MS) - download and run it and post what it reports.

    Tutorial:
This includes links leading to more links telling you about error numbers, where the logs are etc, and preparatory steps.
    Upgrade to Windows 10

    Checks:

Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems.
    No further action is required.

    248697855 KB total disk space.
    55770640 KB in 212072 files.
    131916 KB in 61246 indexes.
    0 KB in bad sectors.
895903 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
    191899396 KB available on disk.

and HDTune v2.55 found no issues was all good?

Thank you for your reply. At this point we don't know whether the SFC failure is significant for your upgrade failure.

You can of course perform various DISM commands or an in-place upgrade repair install of 1809 to hopefully fix that.

How are you trying to upgrade? Via Windows update, or otherwise?

Please could you comment on the first part of my post:

so when I went to download the xbox app it says I need the latest windows update 1909 to be able to use it and when I go on it, it then it downloads windows 10 download assistant it goes all the way through then when goes to restart it just stays on the msi logo.

yeah I got my laptop in 2017

also no it doesn't say anything about the failure on the update history.

Again, to confirm, Windows update is running without failures (the upgrade to 1909 aside), but you haven't previously been offered an upgrade to 1903 or 1909 - is that correct?

If you haven't been offered the upgrade- that would be surprising.

Please check your BIOS is up to date.

Your PC will have a drivers download page; I'd expect instructions/a utility would be there.

no not been offered the 1903 update
    - mm, that indicates there is an incompatibility with your system- either trying to upgrade manually (iso as I posted above) or perhaps as you have been prompted to attempt bypasses that check. This might explain the upgrade failure - there's no way of knowing what that incompatibility might be that I know of.

For now I suggest you update the BIOS, then create a full disk image of Windows to large enough external storage using Macrium Reflect (free) so you can always restore your present build. tenforums members often recommend the routine and regular use of disk imaging.

Then run Setupdiag.exe as I posted above and post the results.
