Upgrading version of Windows (exapmple from 1903 to 1909)

    Hi

So i'm a bit confused about something. If i want to download and install 1909 will WU just install it automatically ?

Or is it more complicated ? Do i just wait for it to install like any other update or is it more complicated to upgrade from 1903 to 1909 for example.

    Hi,
    1. if Windows Update is working normally and your PC is not excluded from receiving it, you would expect to receive it via WU.
    2. 1903 -> 1909 is an enablement package- it's not like any other feature update to date- as such it can be reversed by uninstalling that package like a typical cumulative update.
    3. If you wish to do that manually, as with all the News articles about updates, there are download links at the end of the article about it. See the News section.

In that case you would download it and execute it.

Dalchina, when 2004 will be released will i be able to upgrade from 1903 to 2004 directly using WU ? I mean without having to install 1909 and then install 2004.

    Thank you for your reply.

You can upgrade from any earlier build to any later build.

Manually upgrading avoids any compatibility restrictions imposed by MS on delivering a feature update to protect users.

In your original post, what came before 'So?' e.g. xyz happened so I did pqr...

Again, thank you for your reply.

Interesting how English evolves- we were taught never to do that.. but it's very common now. It breaks what was a grammar rule.

To be fair i'm not english, in fact if you check my flag i'm romanian.

But honestly i find english very easy as a language. I even uninstalled my antivirus because i hated that it got installed in romanian, i was so used to the english version that i had to download that version of the antivirus.

How are you "downloading? How did you plan on installing the update?

If going from Windows Update just let it do its thing. It may ask you to reboot. Reboot and the update should be there.

You can check by opening "Run" and typing "winver" (without quotes) in Run. A screen will appear showing you build and version number. Example: Version (1909) Build 18363.815.

You may need to run Windows Update again to make sure you have the latest updates.

    Hope this helps

If you start with Windows 10 1903 you can:
    a) upgrade using windows update
    b) perform an in place upgrade repair
    c) wait for windows to surprise you with an upgrade
    d) make steps to block upgrades

Upgrades can be performed now to 1909.
Or you can wait for the next version and then perform an upgrade.

There is a default 10 day rollback period.
This default period can be modified.
Or you can make free backup images and rollback.

This is the method for an in place upgrade repair:

The upgrade from 1903 to 1909 has no 10 day rollback and does not create a windows.old folder. It is a minor update performed by an enablement package that installs like a cumulative update. And like a CU it can be uninstalled (no time limit) in Control Panel > Programs and Features > View installed updates. If however you upgrade to 1909 from any earlier version it will be a full upgrade, the enablement package can only work if you are already on 1903.

The update to 2004 will be a conventional full upgrade with a windows.old folder and the usual 10 day period in which you can roll back to your previous version.

It is strongly rumoured that the next version after 2004 (expected in another 6 months) will be done with another small enablement package, same as the 1903/1909 update.
