Optional update comes and goes again

    No problem, more a question
It happened twice in course of time: in Windows update an item came "optional update". I did not do anything with that. In a few days this item (announcement?) had gone again.
What is the meaning of this? Limited time for installing? Became the announcement hidden? Or did MS conclude that the optional update was not relevant for my system and draw it back?

The optional cumulative updates are those issued in the 3rd or 4th weeks of the month (the C/D releases). They are previews of the non-security fixes to be included in the next Patch Tuesday update (the 2nd Tuesday, the B release) the only CU with new security fixes and as such not an optional update.

Once you have installed the latest B release CU the previous optional CU has been superseded and is no longer relevant, so it won't be offered any more.

Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense.
