Windows update service start parameter changes every time I reboot

Trying to update Minecraft for my little brother. The windows update service was disabled, so Microsoft store downloads wouldn't work. I tried to enable and start the service with the "services" window but I don't have permission. I used registry editor to try and add his user account with permission "edit" but it won't let me. I made myself owner of the wuauserv registry folder, and changed the start value to 3, or manual. When I try to manually start the update, it fails with error code 1058, and when I restart the computer out of safe mode, the owner of the wuauserv registry is transferred back to system and the start param is set back to 4, or disabled. Any idea what could be causing the changes? A Malwarebytes scan came back clean.

    Hello @autumnsparkz,

    Welcome to TenForums!

Have you tried this => Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10.

    I hope this helps!

I seemed to have lucked my way into fixing it. I set up an audit on the registry and whatever was changing the values doesn't show up, or change them any more. Thank you!
