    Problems with Update and Restart...?-

This Tue. 4/14 Win Update, they had Update and Restart, or new Update and Shutdown?-
I selected Update and Restart, and it didn't Restart twice..., as in the past.

Wed. was normal cold startup, and I got Word/IE/Chrome trusted by my AV.
Thur. Macrium Reflect auto-started on cold startup!?

    Fri. cold startup was normal.

Q?- In the future, I will use Update and Shutdown!- After I Shutdown, how long should I wait before Cold Startup?

Have a look at this tutorial. Apps resuming is a normal process. Tutorial discusses this and things you can do to impact.

Add Restart Context Menu in Windows 10

You also reference a Cold Startup.

Unless you have disable Windows Fast Startup a power on start is not cold, (fresh copy of Windows)

Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10

Recently, say last four weeks, I've had an issue, and another member reported, where when I restart or power on I get anywhere from one to four copies of Word starting. For sure this is a bug as I ensure Word is closed.

I prefer update and restart. There is that portion of the update where some files can only be updated once Windows has released them. This gets that process underway. Unfortunately with the bug I mentioned above I had to disable "Use my sign in info ......" so that word doesn't start.

I did an Upgrade install from Win-7 Pro 32-bit (So I could install Adobe Photoshop from XP) , to Win-10 Home 64-bit.
SSD support...- had me Disable Hibernate/Indexing in Win-7 Settings. I've never had a problem with Word 10. No more problems with programs auto-starting.

Per another Thread- I need to do a clean Win-10 install, and get rid of the Win-7 32-bit leftovers...!
Covid19 has sure put me behind!

Q?- Windows Updates don't appear to take effect, until after the next cold startup (True?)-
Wouldn't Update and Shutdown/ immediate Cold Startup, put you 1 day ahead?

Some updates for sure need a restart to actually update those files locked by a running Windows. The reboot releases files and they then can be updated. So True for the most part. (So updates like Defender changes don't need a restart)

Don't follow second question about being one day a head.

Up until I was dealing with this problem with Word starting I did an update and restart. I let it complete the whole process. I should mention I rarely Shutdown. Just sleep. So when I'm finished for the day I click update and restart. In the morning my machine is ready for me.
