Windows Update is downloading 1809 on my 1803 system?

I though Microsoft was skipping 1809, shouldn't they be pushing the latest, i.e., 1909?

If you really want to upgrade to the latest version, visit the Download Windows 10 page at Microsoft.com and click the "Update Now" button at the top of the page. This will download the Windows 10 Update Assistant, and help you upgrade to 1909.

Thanks, I do realize I can manually get the 1909 update package and I plan to do this when I am ready to update this system. I was just surprised to see MS pushing 1809 when they have pretty much acknowledged that it should fade into the trash bin of history

Oh, now I understand. I wish I could explain why WU is offering up a soon-to-be-obsolete version of Win10. I just chalk it up to the general heading of "Windows Weirdness," of which there is more than enough to go around.
Thanks for clarifying, and for the rep. Good luck in getting yourself squared away.

I've seen it happen in the past a few times and seems some of the Build updates require a later Version Upgrade, sort of a removal of older updates after a Version reaches End-of-Life.

You can manually update to the latest version using an ISO downloaded by the MCT from any previous version. I have in the past clean installed the original version 1507, build 10240 and successfully upgraded direct to the (then) latest 1903.

But to upgrade via Windows Update you are relying on the currently installed servicing stack to download the required update files. As 1803 is beyond its end of service it is no longer getting servicing stack updates. I suspect the answer to the OP's question...

...is that in order for Windows Update to download the update to 1909 a newer servicing stack than any that was supplied for 1803 is required. To be able to get the latest servicing stack the system first has to update to 1809, then update the servicing stack, and only then can it update to 1909.

Thanks, I just figured that Microsoft's push servers would be smart enough to push the latest release. I did not initiate WUS to update this machine, this is MS pushing the update (or instructing this PC to initiate). I do have the ISO for 1909 which I have used to update two other PC's in my home that were also on 1803 and had not problem. I am just not ready to update this particular machine, so I guess I will just have to keep delaying the update once it finishes downloading. Fortunately, this particular system is off most of the time so it won't get lots of opportunity to complete the download.

And, since 1803 was still being serviced after the 1903 update, I would at least expect the servicing stack to get 1903.

I sure hope not We ALL have more important things to take care of.

End of Service for 1803 Home and Pro was November 12, 2019 which should mean it would get a servicing stack capable of downloading 1909. But as "this particular system is off most of the time" it may not have got it yet, not before the old servicing stack found the 1809 Feature Update.

I appreciate the replies and will mark this solved as it was really more of in information question than a problem that needed fixing. Thanks!!
