You certainly have to extract the files. Otherwise, nothing will happen.

Done... as admin and selected option 2 for metered.... i selected "no" to scheduled task (just before metered)... was that ok ?

I am prompted to restart my computer... is it ok if I do that after my movie or when I wake up if I fall asleep ??

I read the "read me" in the zip file (should have done that first)... #3 says to say Yes to "scheduled task".... which I said no to... sorry !!!

As I will not restart my computer tonight... should I use the "undo everything" then restart and redo the procedure (as written in your "read me" file) and then restart after ??
(would that be better or just re-run it and select Yes to "Scheduled Task" ??)

Lastly, what about my question regarding deleting all files in the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder ??
(would it change anything ? or change the error message in WU?... or is that the reason why it downloaded it again ??)

Let's set aside "Scheduled Task" for now. At the moment, the most important thing is to prevent the auto-downloading.

My guess is that "WaasMedicSvc.dll", one of the update hijackers, had reset Windows Update. "Disable hijackers.cmd", which you already ran, should have disabled the hijackers. Let's see whether I have guessed correctly.

As I thought I did fall asleep while watching that movie.... lol

When I woke up, I started by deleting all files in the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder and then restarted my computer. It was not that fastest start-up I saw but it wasn't as long as it was a few days ago but at least there was no errors or frozen programs/apps....
I did get a message (from OneDrive) that I was on a metered connection and to either leave it offline or "sync anyways" (which i did because I use it).... so that tells me the procedure you gave me yesterday worked (besides the Scheduled Task).

After that I went to check on the WU ... and this is what I saw (see pic).... yesterday I thought I saw at one point WU saying it was "disabled" or something similar.... is it supposed to be like in the attached pic ??

What should I do now ??
Do you suggest I redo the procedure you sent me (all tasks as indicated in the "read me" file or leave it as is?? (and how if so, how will I know if its "fixed"?)

Note: From what I read in the read me file, the "Scheduled Task" allows for other updates besides WU 1909 (by selecting it)... is that correct ?? If so, I think I would like to have that as there are other important things that might need to be updated (NetFramwork, Office, etc)

My WU has never said "disabled", and updates have never been downloaded automatically without my permission. See the following screenshot of my WU:

sc config "wuauserv" start=demand

That will enable the Windows Update service, but updates will not be downloaded automatically.

(2) In the "Matthew's preference" folder, double-click to run "Import Scheduled Task.cmd", which will import the scheduled task of checking for updates. A message box will pop up as long as updates have been found. Hide unwanted updates as soon as they have been found.

(3) Never click on the "Check for updates" button shown in your attached screenshot. If you want to check for updates manually, use Windows Update MiniTool (included in Matthew's preference).

The scheduled task will bring up a dialog box when updates have been found. Then, you may use Windows Update MiniTool to either install or hide the updates. For further inquiry about my scripts, post a message in my tutorial: Using CMD script and VBScript to control Windows Update

PowerShell CMD line, then "import scheduled task" (is the Update mini-tool part of that or separate? and if so... do I install it now from your zip file?)

Will I have to (or better to) do a restart after those above steps ?

Don't worry I will NOT touch the WU "check for updates" once I have followed your instructions I hope that not only all will be good (thanks to you and this forum) but that I won't have to mess around with WU again.... until my next computer...lol

You do not have to restart Windows.

I did the steps as specified above, no issues but I do have a question regarding the Schedule Task... when I ran it it finished with the metered/unmetered option... I selected metered connection (hope that was right ??)
It was successful but.... the last thing written in that window was "the default connection has been set to metered. Please reboot your computer for the changes to take effect"

It's not a problem as I have to restart my computer anyways ... just wanted to let you know !

On a different topic... something weird happened yesterday with Windows Settings (I went to check on the status of WU)...
it took a little longer than usual to open (saw a grey window for about 10 sec before the content appeared) but what worries me a little is that I was unable to close that window with the "X" in top right corner.... (had to do a right clic on the tab in the taskbar and select "close window" to be able to close it...... any idea what could cause that ??
(BTW tried it 3 times without restarting my PC and it did the same thing)

I know the last part is off topic, if its better I start a new thread for that let me know. Thanks

It is always right to select metered connections. Note that you may create a desktop shortcut to C:\#\Windows Update MiniTool.exe
