The approach that you have is causing you difficulty.

It is a no win situation.

In order to move from where you are now (defeated) you must spend time learning something new.

With that, as I've said many times.... owning a PC is an active endeavor not a passive one. If you choose not to learn you become passive.

I already have it (Windows Ultimate Tweaker)... should I use it or is it better i use the command you gave me? or both ?
Also... "elevated command prompt" = cmd run as admin ??

And.. do you know if that will erase the error message in Windows update (last update failed - try again)... and what about the 5-6 gigs files it downloaded in the SoftwareDistribution\Download directory yesterday??

    Thanks again, Z.
If your computer skills aren't as good as you say, you might consider leaving services as they are as disabled services could affect other things not seen immediately - that favorite program suddenly no longer works because the service it depends on is now disabled. I personally only recommend disabling services to those who understand how to troubleshoot a PC and also have some semblance of what said service does.

    My two cents.

Right-click on the Start button-->Windows PowerShell (Admin). Run the following commands:

    CMD
    sc config "wuauserv" start=disabled

Then, the Windows Update service will be disabled.

    Attachment 271986

When the service has been disabled, restart Windows, and you will know if that will erase the message.

    Manually delete the folder.
Did the steps as you described... worked... and easy !! (just like i like it..lol)

Will delete files in folder (as specified) and will restart .... will be back in 10-15 min (depending on how slow my start-up will be).... and will check on Windows Update notification/error message before posting the results....

*** UPDATE: It worked... my Windows Update is back to saying "you're up to date" and prompts me to verify now... with the mention that my version of Windows is nearing the end of its service.....
For now I will leave it as it is and IF I decide to attempt the update to 1909 (with all the probs it will most likely give me)... I will be back to ask for your very helpful assistance !!! (still debating if its worth the risk or not.... lol)

    Thanks again.

I understand that (and agree with you regarding my computer skills ... which I downplay because I just "don't want to do it".... and not because "I don't know how to"...... lolll

But if I follow your suggestion... then it would not resolve my current problem.... (Windows already REstarted download of update 1909 (stopped at 13%), had actually downloaded everything yesterday and was prompting me to restart to install update...... and wouldn't be able to uninstall it after if I had clicked "yes/ restart"....

So what do you suggest I do .... ??
(BTW I did follow the procedure to stop the service as posted above, already deleted the files in the ...SoftwareDistribution\Download folder and was about to restart my computer...)

I'm only going by what you post and thus post accordingly. Do what makes you comfortable.

    Good luck.

I know some people like you (thankfully for us) prefer when its not easy and a challenge with computers (Windows) that is not the case for me.... I would much rather spend my time and energy working on other types of projects (like the restaurant / smokehouse I am currently working on) and actually use my laptop as a tool (research, internet, website, maps, marketing, etc etc) and not as an item I have to spend time learning or fixing..... I would much rather spend that time fixing the fridge & freezer, build my smoker, BBQ pit, etc etc.......

I do thank you for providing me with a solution (one you don't like!) it is much appreciated !!
Just hope I didn't offend any of you "pros/gurus" with my lack of willingness to spend more time really fixing this problem and not only using a "band-aid" solution..... I do like learning new things.... a lot.... just not for things I dont really care for and see as a waste of time I could be using doing something far more useful and rewarding ;-)

I have already spent more time on this than I wanted to (about 2-3 hrs yesterday and almost 4 so far today) but... I do have to say that I did enjoy this conversation and did in fact learn someting new already (and have the tools & links if I do decide to work on this further in the near future....). Thanks for that !!

I do understand that (I am not always clear about my questions or problem... sorry)....
I hope I didn't sound insulting or disrespectful.. that was not my intent at all....

I was just looking for clarifications as to the impact of not stopping the service (as you said.. due to my "limited knowledge/efforts" with computers)...
so if you didn't recommend (for someone like me) to disable to service... what would you recommend I do to resolve my current issue??

    On a different topic....

I just remembered that I was a member of the sevenforums.com (which I forgot my username / password for and havent used in a long time of course)...

    Are these forums related?

I will definitely stay a member of this forum and visit regularly..... you guys are great and very helpful !!! Thanks again....
And who knows maybe one day I will be able to help someone too.... ;-)

Scroll down this page to see if your laptop is listed for the right driver... at the very bottom of the page it says wireless driver: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9000 Series Wireless LAN Driver for HP Laptops - Windows 10 Drivers

    Thanks will do....
My model is Atheros AR5B125 is that part of the qca9000 series ??
Also, If I remember correctly the issues I had back in November werent only in regards to my Qualcom... it was alo with some router models (and of course is a model very common here).... would have to check on that too....

The more I think about it, the less convinced I am that "upgrading" to 1909 would be good for me.... in the pros & cons, the cons seem to win.... not only because of the unknown issues (will it work or not) but mostly because it would be very difficult to revert back to my current version and I have a feeling I would regret that decision after the fact.....

Dont want to sound negative but from my past experiences with these **** forced updates the end result is never good !!

Sorry and thanks again (to all of you) for taking the time to answer my questions & concerns.
Stay safe and stay healthy !!

Yes, they are. See the 'Our Sites' list at the bottom of every page. Many members are registered on both, this would seem to be you: Zorbitron's Seven Forums Profile (Last Activity: 13 Jan 2010)

1903 and 1909 share a common set of system files, the only difference between the two is that the new features are turned on by a small enablement package. So if 1903 gave you trouble, so would 1909.

    Microsoft said:
Windows 10, versions 1903 and 1909 share a common core operating system with an identical set of system files. Therefore, the new features in Windows 10, version 1909 were included in the latest monthly quality update for Windows 10, version 1903 (released October 8, 2019), but are in an inactive and dormant state. These new features will remain dormant until they are turned on through the “enablement package,” a small, quick-to-install “master switch” that activates the Windows 10, version 1909 features.
KB4517245 Feature Update via Windows 10 v1909 Enablement Package

Personally, in your situation I would first make a system image with Macrium Reflect Free then, when I'm confident I could restore the system as it stands now, I'd try a clean install of 1909. That may not suffer the same problems as the upgrade did. If so, then the problem is being carried over from the current system, not a fault in 1909 as such. Armed with that knowledge it may be possible to work out how to upgrade successfully.
