KB4551762 update fails repeatedly, gives Error 0x800f0986

I am running Windows 10 Pro, 1909, x64 and all other updates have installed successfully except KB4551762. I was unable to find any other posts similar to my problem. The actions I have done so far are:
    - Ran Troubleshooter for Windows updates....no problem found.
    - Manually downloaded/installed KB4551762 with same results...failed with Error 0x800f0986.
    - Restarted into Safe Mode but the Windows Updates didn't seem to work, just got a blank screen with Windows updates at top.
    - Checked Device Manager for any problems but nothing showed bad.
    - Checked my disk space, more than 100GB free space.
At this point I need some help so any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Major update 20H1 (Windows 10 v2004) due in a few weeks. I wouldn't worry about this one, for the time being.

Thanks idgat, as long as I don't experience any other problems including Windows updates, I guess I will follow your suggestion and just wait. Still, it would be nice to know what the error means or why it is occurring.

Interestingly enough, when I run your error code through the Windows Error Lookup Tool, I get a "not found" result. May want to check the rendering of the code to see if it's correct. If so, this is the first such "not found" I've run into.

Hi Ed, assuming the 1st 2 hex digits are not needed(0x...) that is the correct error code. I have attached a snapshot of the error as it happens. And yes, it continues to fail repeatedly after many restarts.

I have the same exact error on the same update. Not sure what to do.

I fixed it by downloading the latest ISO file and updating that way. All fixed and working now.

Now KB4541335 won't install. Same error.

Can confirm an in-place upgrade fixed it. Just download the media creation tool, choose upgrade this PC, it should automatically be set to "keep all files and programs", and it didn't seem to change anything other than fixing the update. Although I am getting a "default app was reset" notification, but it seems to have stopped.

Sorry, I didn't get notification of your post. Yes, via the media creation tool - but you already did that now!
