Yes, we do. Running SFC /ScanNow at boot to repair an offline system is Option One.

Run SFC Command in Windows 10
    Thanx B!

The original windows 7 licence was from the OS supplied with the PC with a sticker.....I have been running perfectly ever since the free UG to W10.....
what was the edition of Windows 7 before you upgraded to Win10?

also can you post a pic or screenshot of that COA sticker on that PC that mentioned Win7?

@reddwarf4ever , In your opening post:

Not sure why it says i have a HP PC ????”
--- The message is “The Windows editions on the devices listed below don’t match the Windows edition on the device that you are using at the moment.”
You PC was originally Win7 Pro. Was it originally an HP PC?
Today your PC is on the upgrade to Win10 Pro: when was it “custom build by Fierce" per your system specs?

"decided to reboot and try installing W10, low and behold, it installed completely, seems to be a lot more things to decide on during the install process, but all went ok and activated immediately on its own"
--- Can you get back to that point and stay with it in order to ensure what needs to be double-checked?
--- Once everything is in order, create a new Macrium Reflect image backup.

“now going to restore a Macrium reflect image and if not activated, may well have to start again"
--- Why do that? That might be the source of your problem?

    W7 was PRO......

Sorry, think I have misled everyone, the PC did Not come with W7 preinstalled, I bought W7 from an online seller, with the disk, maybe that’s where the HP comes from, but as it activates perfectly well with a clean install, I don't see it’s a Key issue, it’s most likely something ‘ corrupt’ in files that are kept in a Macrium image, even fails to activate with an upgrade......this must mean something to someone !!!

Guess I am going to be told off... but W10 free upgrade worked flawlessly and has been perfect for a long long time...

@reddwarf4ever post #35 “it’s most likely something ‘ corrupt’ in files that are kept in a Macrium image, even fails to activate with an upgrade......this must mean something to someone !!!”
--- I’m wondering what you mean by “an upgrade”?
--- You have already upgraded to Windows 10 Pro from Windows 7 Pro, how is an upgrade involved now?
--- “W10 free upgrade worked flawlessly and has been perfect for a long long time...”

“it’s most likely something ‘ corrupt’ in files that are kept in a Macrium image” is what I was trying to find out about in my post #34

    Can you go with
“--- Can you get back to that point and stay with it in order to ensure what needs to be double-checked?
--- Once everything is in order, create a new Macrium Reflect image backup.” ?

Oh yes, can you let us know "when was it “custom build by Fierce" per your system specs?"

Was custom built in October 2013, not sure the bearing on the problem......yes can easily go back to a fresh install, then will wait and see what I need to do......when I talk about Upgrade, I refer to the Windows upgrade, where all windows files are replaced but programs etc kept......not a good choice of words, but not mine.....prefer refresh, but that means something else.....

The most important thing is to ensure you have your PC running according to your expectations.

    My recommendations are
Make sure windows Updates are up-to-date.
Implement a MR image backup on a schedule that suits you.
I do mine monthly during the week before Patch Tuesday after a maintenance regimen I use.
I also save my data separately.
Since you did a clean install, keep that media/process handy.

    On every PC I touch

I create a USB Recovery drive including mine.
Create Recovery Drive in Windows 10.
    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html
Ensure that Backup system files to the recovery drive is checked.

I like to verify that the PC is permanently activated up front
Use Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Run as Administrator) to run slmgr -xpr
My PC suddenly says its not activated-machine-permanently-activated.jpg

Naturally I get more than enough resistance to those 2 items but if I'm not allowed permission to do them or they don't agree to keep their Windows Updates up-to-date, I'll tell the person I'm helping, take your PC elsewhere.

So now I have a clean install and windows is activated, what are my steps to find out why my original windows install wasn’t activated......

    I await instructions........

and apart from checking activation, I do everything else as per your suggestions......will in future check validated once a month.......
