Post 38 could be confusing if someone where not following closely. You might want to make it more clear that IF it were an Insider install you would see that.
I am sorry.…. but I do not think I could have been more explicit ie- ref posts #28 and #38.

The definitive answer would be to see what the Surface Pro 4 says in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Programme.

If that is a screenshot from the Surface Pro 4 then it is telling you that it is already on the Release Preview ring and that explains why it was offered the 2004 Feature update. Clicking on that grey 'Release Preview' box will let you change rings, as per this tutorial.

Change Windows 10 Insider Program Ring Level

If you were not on an Insider ring then that page would be asking you to join Insiders, not to choose a ring.

Well there wouldn't be. the Release Preview build is exactly what it says on the tin - a preview of the build that will be released to the public. It has no watermark, no expiry date and, crucially, Winver does not include the word 'Insider'.

Look at the page you took a screenshot of for your post #53. It is unfortunate that you cut it off at 'Windows Insider account'. If just below that it has a switch to 'Stop getting preview builds' then you are on the Insider release preview ring after all.

From a security point of view why would M$ plant an insider flight on my SP4.
My post #53 offers stay on RTM or......I did not click it...so still on RTM.
M$ have always maintained the security on Surface Pro laptops is of the highest order and many US government agencies have endorsed it.
Others on this thread have already expressed concerns about Updating it, reliability etc.
The Insider Account and my M$ account use the same security measures...so on this SP4 Insider refers to another computer on which it is installed....so is irrelevant.

Your Surface Pro 4 screenshot in post #53 match those in @Brink's tutorials for a machine that is on the Insider Release Preview ring. The items in its Settings pages apply to this SP4, Settings cannot show you the settings of another machine. Therefore , though you may not have intended to do it, this SP4 is saying that it is now in the Release Preview ring.

Multi-boot Windows 10/11 - RTM, RP, Beta, and Insider

Part of all this is a tad of semantics. To MS, anything not RTM is "Insider", in the realm of the whole "testing" world, whether explicitly stated or not. RP may be better described as "Staging Release", but it is not. You need to be registered in the Insider Program to get anything non-RTM.

I'm sure I have a word or 2 out of place or misguided, but it's the best I can do right now.
