Is it safe to disable Windows 10 Updates

Without going into details I have a very unstable system. When I disable W10 Updates my computer runs a lot better.

Is this safe enough to do? Is there anything I can do to make sure my computer becomes less vulnerable to a hack?

I have disabled automatic Windows Update. I have scheduled Windows Defender to be updated at six-hour intervals. So far, so good.

I'm afraid no one can guarantee safety without security updates.

No one can guarantee safety - period. Perhaps in many cases user behaviour is the greatest risk.

As Matthew Wai indicated, disabling Windows Updates also disables Defender updates- for which you have to make separate provision (tutorial available). Or perhaps you use 3rd party security software which would not be affected in the same way.

You definitely want security type updates.

Is there any good reason you are still on 1809?

Perhaps the most important security update is to upgrade from version 1809 which reaches end of support on May 12, 2020. An upgrade may also help with your stability issues.

Patches and Security updates are routinely released through Windows Update. Microsoft releases updates to address multiple vulnerabilities in Microsoft software. A remote attacker could exploit some of these vulnerabilities to take control of an affected system.
