I also saw that one should also disable WaaSMedicSVC.

    Are you familiar with this?
This is absent from my Windows 10. WaaSMedicSVC will re-enable Windows Update even if you have disabled it according to this article: Windows Update Medic Service (WaaSMedicSVC) in Windows 10

I am just not really comfortable with following the directions.
I don't know a way to control Windows Update without following directions.

Sorry, I didn't mean exactly not following directions, I meant that the possible suggestions which were very listed are just too complicated for me. The possibility of disabling through Services via the Start menu (which is different from the services I see with Task Manager) is something I can do. But, I also saw that one should disable the Windows Update Medic Service. Your link certainly shows that that is not so easy to do.

    Thanks for you continued help.

I guess I'll throw in the towel and ask my computer guy to look into this.

I just discovered that when I check Windows Update Settings, I can pause for a long period.

If I quite the Update Settings, and then check again, the pause dates are increased.

In short, the problem of being able to pause for a longer period of time has been solved for me.

Try SledgeHammer. Completely turns off WU and puts it under the user's absolute control: Download Sledgehammer (formerly WUMT Wrapper Script) - MajorGeeks. The author, Gary Thurman, posts regularly on TF and really knows his stuff.
