Windows Update with Metered Connection - What to Expect

I have Metered Connection enabled to hopefully get more control over downloads. What changes can I expect with Windows Update?

I've seen information that a Download Button might appear but I don't know if that applies to my version of Windows.

I'm using Windows 10 Home, Version 1909, OS Build 18363.657

You can set Windows Update to notify for download and installing updates.

I set a "Metered Connection" when I first started using Windows 10 in October 2018. It worked perfectly, warning me of all Windows update download sizes and allowing me the option to proceed using a meter connection or delay indefinitely.

Then last year things changed and suddenly Microsoft decided to send Feature updates regardless of the "Metered Connection" setting. Since then I've used WAU Manager and problem solved.

Your first link points to "WUMT Wrapper Script" Now known as Sledgehammer. My choice for complete control.

Many thanks to all for the very helpful information!

My Internet connection is fairly slow. I have survived so far by pausing updates and then checking for new updates at an appropriate time. An update can take a considerable amount of time.

If your metered connection has been enabled by modifying Windows Registry, you can expect to see the following:

I am using Windows 10 Home Version 1903, on which no updates have been installed without my permission.

Thanks very much for the information and the two images. The Download button is exactly what I was hoping to see and I hope it works the same in Windows 10 Version 1909.

I set Metered Connection by going to Settings, Network & Internet, Change Connection Properties, and then Set As Metered Connection. That apparently does change a bit in the Registry.

There is also an override under Windows Update which I do not use. It can be accessed by going to Settings, Update & Security, Advanced Options, and Download Updates Over Metered Connections.

I'm currently Pausing Updates. If the Download button works as expected, I should be able to Resume Updates.

I should note that there is also a Windows Update option called Delivery Optimization. You can specify how much bandwidth is used for downloading updates over a range of 5% to 100%.

I have never set connections as metered by your method. I have done so by the following method:

"0x00000002 (2)" denotes a metered connection. Check it out.

You may use Windows Update MiniTool to hide updates permanently as shown below:

When you want to install them afterward, you may "unhide" them.
