    kb-2267602 Doesn't want to install

I have just recently updated my wife's computer to Windows 10 and when I check for updates it will show an update for Windows Defender but it won't install. I have checked online and it looks like a common problem. Is there a solution for this?

You can also update through the Windows defender user interface. See if that will work for you. If not, please post what symptoms you get when you try updating.

By the way, about the two links you are given above - .
    - The answers forum link provides the command line to run a WD update and the Matt Slay article acknowledges that it has been derived from the same thread in that forum.
    - Using the Windows defender user interface method is as good as using the command line [I use both, depending on circumstances]

Open the WD interface [it is probably in your SystemTray but will definitely be in your Start menu, where it uses its new name of Windows security]
In the left-hand panel, click on Virus & threat protection,
Look down the right-hand side for the sub-heading Virus & threat protection updates,
Just below that you will see in blue text Check for updates,
click on that and WD will run its update procedure.

Doesn't make sense to me but I did what you said and it didn't seem to do anything. So i went int the definitions update history and it indicated that it had been inastalled about 3 times . So if it is happy, then I am happy. Thank you for your help.

    William,

I'm not sure where you mean by "the definitions update history". If you mean Settings, Update & security, View update history then you will see many KB2267602 entries because the same KB number is used for every WD update.

It will definitely be in the system tray. OP can simply drag WD icon from system tray into the taskbar to be easily viewed and managed, which is what I do.

If I understand correctly every update to Windows Defender will have the same kb number. That would be weird.

    William,

You do understand correctly. Every WD definitions update is KB2267602 [only the definitions number changes and that is in the details].

MS also sneaks many updates to WD itself into their WD definitions update files. So you might sometimes see a KB number called a WD engine update or similar or you might find that one has happened without any other KB being identified.

If you ever want to see your WD version ["Antimalware Client Version"] & defnitions version ["Antivirus Version"],
open up the WD use interface,
    Settings [bottom-left corner],
About [central area near the bottom].
