Where did the 1909 upgrade go?

Yesterday I decided that maybe it was time to update my two W10 machines to 1909, after all it has been around for some time already. Booted my desktop (running 1903) and it just finished applying updates. Then I noticed that the "Upgrade to 1909" was not in the Windows Update settings page. Looking in the internet, I found statements from MS that the update was super-easy already pre-installed and also people reporting upgrade errors, which make me re-think a bit the whole situation.

Then I booted my aging laptop with an older W10 1809. It had the "Upgrade to 1909" link there which I didn't dare to try now; instead I decided to install the latest 1809 patches. After the reboot, the "Upgrade to 1909" had disappeared, replaced by an "Upgrade to 1903". At this point I has even happy to see it gone and decided to upgrade and leave both machines at 1903. Once at 1903, no more "Upgrade to 1909" in the laptop either.

So... what happened to 1909? I cannot really find anything about this mysterious disappearance. :)

Things like this can happen: (note Nov '19)
Microsoft is blocking Windows 10 1903 and 1909 upgrades for some antivirus users - Neowin

Then you could try this (post #2)
how can i upgrade from 1903 to 1909, not offered yet in updates

But note 1909 has a significant bug widely reported in the change they made in file explorer search. I reverted to 1903.

My system is at v.1809 and has been displaying the v.1909 “download and install” link on the WU page since the November Patch Tuesday CU update. I was waiting until later in January to do the v.1909 update. Then the January Patch Tuesday update left the WU page with the link to update to v.1903, instead of 1909. I have no idea why, except that some part of the WU has gotten out of sync. with what is installed on my system. I’m going to do the WU to v.1903 this weekend and see what happens, since the last attempt by WU to update to v.1903 failed twice. I have two v.1809 system images and a v.1903 flash drive download in case something goes awry this time. I probably should just use the flash drive, but I want to see if WU works properly.

WU can be working fine, yet the upgrade may fail for all manner of reasons- those are two separate things

A number of users seem to be experiencing this sort of reversion to 1903. I'm wondering- no more than that- if MS is withdrawing it whilst fixing a couple of things- e.g. the file explorer search problem.

OP the same thing happened to me also.

I am also using W10 version 1903 and 1-2 days ago it updated and now the feature update 1909 isn't available anymore. I don't know why this happenet, at first i thought this was only happening for me but it looks like other people are having the same issue.

I don't know about antivirus issues, in that article above it says for Avast and AVG. I am using Kaspersky Antivirus 2020 but Kaspersky hasn't blocked anything for me. When it actually blocks something it notifies me and there is always a pop-up which tells you what it blocked.

I also made a topic about this, if you want you can check it out.

Maybe we can wait until the next version update comes out. Was 1909 like really essential to have ?

I mean if the next one, 1910 for example or whatever version it will be, will come out, can we just upgrade from 1903 directly the what the latest version will be at the time ?

I just wish MS would do something about this. I have no problem in waiting for the next version update, but i would just like to know if i need to or if they will resolve this in some sort of mini-update in the future and 1909 will become available again the Windows Update option.

Good, I tried several times this morning to get 1909 updated, finally gave up and formatted the SSD and went to The Fast Ring. I have an MR Image from 11.25 and it was a PITB getting all the updates.

Thanks guys for confirming that this is a general behavior. Right now I am glad I didn't upgrade to 1909. That article is indeed very interesting. Maybe MS will just try to skip 1909 and fix those Explorer issues in 20H1/2004 (or whatever the next version will be named) or eventually backport the fix to 1909. In any case, as dalchina says, it makes sense that it could be related to the Explorer issues.
