Win 10 "wake-up" takes too long!

Hi, my PC (win10-1909) takes between 15 and 20 seconds to wake up after sitting idle for a while. I have to hit the space bar several times until something happens.
My wife's PC, same win10 version, wakes up after about 2 seconds.
Any advice where to start looking?
    Thanks,
    Ed

If I had to guess, my guess would be that you have your computer set to Hibernate rather than Sleep.

Sleep simply puts the computer in a low power state from which it can wake very quickly. However, Hibernate saves the entire system state to disk and then powers off so it takes a lot longer to get back to last running state because it has to load all that data back from the disk.

Take a look at these articles to help you determine if this is the case. The goal would be to disable Hibernation and enable Sleep.

Enable or Disable Hibernate in Windows 10
Add or Remove Sleep in Power menu in Windows 10

After you review this, let us know if this helped.

    Thanks for the quick response.
I checked hibernate and it's set to never.

One other possibility just dawned on me:

It's possible that the delay could be the result of a disk that is spun down and having to spin back up. By any chance is the system that is booting very quickly using an SSD while the other system uses at least one spinning disk (this could include an external HD)?

Both PCs have "regular" HDs, no SSDs.

I have only one other idea. Maybe some others will jump in if they have further ideas.

Maybe the system that is taking longer is using a different sleep state. See this article for a list of the sleep states and differences between them as well as how to determine what your computer is using:

Sleep States Available on your Windows 10 PC

This may be something that you can alter in your BIOS settings.

There are three main options with sleep, regular sleep, no sleep, and hybrid sleep. the sleep and no sleep options are self explanatory. the Third type is a basic sleep working normally after set time system sleeps, the hybrid sleep does the same but after a further time period which after a set period switches to hibernation mode. It does not matter what the hibernate rules are set to

You may want to check the advanced sleep settings if a"allow Hybrid Sleep" is enabled a quick check can be made by waiting until the screen goes into sleep and immediately tap the spacebar and see how long the system takes to wake. then let the device sleep again and this time leave it for an hour or two or three - if it takes a longer time to wake there is a good chance that hybrid slip is active

I did turn off the "Hybrid Sleep" but it did not make any difference.
My wife's PC (the fast one) has Hybrid Sleep turned on and it still wakes the PC within 1-2 sec.
    Go figure!

    Apparently, there is no solution.
Anyway, what I have noticed during the past week or so is that the PC is awfully slow overall.
Every single application takes 5 to 10 sec to even open, switching around inside an app is slow but I hear the HD cranking away even when the PC sits idle.
I clean (Ccleaner) and defrag it once a week but that does not seem to make a difference.
Any ideas, where I should start digging?

Only thing I would suggest is to check if you have items that load as startup that you do not need, Compaq/HP are known for adding a lot of small Free programs to run at startup - these are things such as hard Drivemonitors and other items that are also provided as part of the OS so are totally superfluous,

These programs load at startup and then run in the background and thus slow down other program.

You also find this type of program included with programs or office/graphics suites that you purposely install, with the same result

Microsoft have an excellent free program to list all the things that run at startup Called Autoruns the description and download is here ... https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...loads/autoruns

Take a look at the program and how to use it, (it includes an option to disable startup items and when you are happy that you do not need the program permanently delete the entry)

One thing I would recommend is that you read the instructions carefully, enable the option in settings to protect "Microsoft startup Items" so you cannot damage the OS, there is also a link on each entry to check on line what an item does, useful for items you do not recognise. It also contains an option to check any item at the online Malware checker Virus Total, which allows you to check unknown items for viruses or malware

Used with care Autoruns can be one of the best tools for speeding up an operating system
