Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro doesn't Activate

what did you use to update to Windows 10 from W7 -- the install at least should have given you a choice -- if you had W17 Pro or Ultimate --even a OEM copy it should work on THE SAME COMPUTER.

Two solutions here

1) use the Windows MCT tool to update from W7-->W10 -- and in the iso add a file ei.cfg

2) Better (IMO) for W10 PRO -- get the latest edition via UUPDUMP, extract the command file which will make you an ISO and then simply run that to install Windows.

I have an even older Sony VAIO laptop with a Pentium IV processor in it -- updated fine from W7. !!! I used the UUPDUMP method.

The currently installed Win 7 OEM SLP key won't work on Win 10 as it's a generic. However if the COA key was installed that would be great - run the ShowKeyPlus Preview version to check - it should also give the Win 7 details under Upgrades.

PM me the legible parts of the COA sticker key and I'll try to re-engineer the rest to see if we can get the full key.

Thanks for the offer. The COA key has never been used so a the key on the installed Win 7 is generic.

I cloned the disk, booted into Win 7 Pro and ran setup from a USB Win 10 installation disk.
As I wrote on post #1, I don't have a Win 7 pro key. So a Win 10 clean install using win 7 key isn't available.

Went to the UUP dump and don't know what to do. Download a beta version, extract and run setup?

I found a solution to upgrade my Sony laptop from Win 7 pro to Win 10 Pro.
As I described on the first post a upgrade from running Win 7 didn't work.
So I followed Brink tutorial Clean Install Windows 10 without having to Upgrade First
SIW2 suggested gatherosstate dance on post #8 but I didn't understand what he meant.
From running Win 7 Pro I generated a GenuineTicket.xml using gatherosstate.exe tool.
Then I did a Win 10 Pro Clean install on a blank SSD drive and used the GenuineTicket.xml generated under Win 7 Pro and it Activated Win 10 Pro just installed.
Now I have a Win 10 Pro license on the M$ servers to the Sony laptop and I can do a upgrade from Win 7 Pro that it will activate.

How To Clean Install And Activate Windows 10

1. Insert the bootable Windows 10 media, then expose its contents.
2. Expose the contents of the sources folder.
3. Copy the gatherosstate.exe file to the desktop.
4. Right-click that file and then click "Run as Administrator".
5. A GenuineTicket.xml file will appear on the desktop.
6. Copy that file to a USB thumb drive.
7. Do a clean install of Windows 10.
8. Skip the step to enter a product key.
9. After Windows 10 is installed, navigate to the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\ClipSVC\GenuineTicket folder.
10. Use the USB thumb drive you have the GenuineTicket.xml file saved in to copy it inside the GenuineTicket folder.
11. Restart the computer.

Notes:
The above steps should work in a computer that already has a working activated copy of Windows 7 SP1.
The GenuineTicket.xml file will only work in the same working computer that it was created in.
Before you complete step 9, navigate to File Explorer, then click "View - Options - Change folder and search options", then click "View - Show hidden files, folders and drives", then click Apply.
