Am considering amending my “active hours” setting and am unsure about a couple of things:
I tend not to leave the machine on over-night, is this a problem.
Was considering revised active hours settings from 09.00 to 21.00, this would leave (say) 2-3 hours for updates, would this be enough time.
Any advice most welcome

Hi, it's not the time an update takes to download, say, but the time window in which an restart can occur that is set by 'active hours'.
Note: as you have Pro, you also have the option to set updates to Notify via Group Policy- that means no update occurs without you approving it.
I prefer to monitor the restarts of WU updates, so my active hours are set with a start time of 6:00 AM and an end time of 11:00 PM. This is the time frame my system is on and being used. The time between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM is when the system is powered off (except on Fridays when Norton runs a full system scan and the system is definitely not idle). 2 - 3 hours might be good enough for most CUs, but I've had FUs take longer (and I'd definitely want to be around for those). Since the restarts won't run if the system is being used, I end up with a message in the message center about the restart and I can do the restart at will. So far, my protocol has not had any issues with WU running. On my system WU usually runs automatically in the late morning or early afternoon, so update downloads get done when I'm awake. Yesterday, WU ran at 8:23 PM, with no updates. That's rather late. I still have not figured out what triggers WU to check for updates, but it's usually every day or so and at some random time during the day.
