    Windows 10 not updating.

I know there must be a thread on this somewhere but I can’t find it.

    I am running Windows 10 pro 1909

I am getting very tired of this. My updates are loading automatically. Than suddenly it will stop and I get a failed install than every update after that fails, it has done this a number of times. I have gone directly to the update catalog and have tried to manually load them with no joy. I have tried fixing it with info found online, phooey.. I have resorted to refreshing Windows 10 3 times in the last two months to clear this.

It will download the update. Than move to install. It will get to 100% than I will get the error cide listed below.

The latest “patch Tuesday” resulted in this

    KB4530684 Error 0x800f0986

Surely there must be fix for this. It gets old having load a new copy of windows even if I don’t loose everything.

    Use Windows Update Troubleshooter.

    • Right-click on Start button and pick Settings
    • Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot
    • Click on Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter

    Download Windows updates manually.

    • Go to the official Microsoft update catalog;
    • Enter a specific update code, for example, KB4481031
    • Select the correct version and click Download
    • Click on the link and Windows will update your computer

Resetting the Windows Update components can usually solve these types of issues.

Hi, that's not your only option.

Should you be forced to implement a more drastic repair, please consider an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data and most settings.

Tutorial available if needed. You need an iso of your current build and language to do this.

Hopefully your problem can be resolved without doing either this time.

    From Freebooter's post:
Click on Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter
    - and post a screenshot of the result.

The trouble shooter found no problems, ran the script as an administrator which reset everything, restarted, Did a manual load of KB4530684 and it still will not install. Lord do I miss XP. I always use the refresh option that keeps my files and most of my app’s.

There is one thing I failed mention, which should have not baring with the reset. Everything was normal on the 10th according to the update log. On the 11th is when the trouble started. My crappola Centrylink DSL was very unstable most of the 11th. Because of past difficulties I check in on the updater after patch Tuesday to see if things worked. It sad I had an available update that is when the old problem returned.

keeps my files and most of my app’s.
An in-place upgrade repair install does exactly that - as I said in bold.

Use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool (search for it) - download an iso file, log in, rt click the iso file and Mount it, then open the new drive letter created double click setup.exe.

I don't know why you're repeatedly having these update problems- that's not normal at all.

tenforums members tirelessly recommend the routine use of disk imaging. Just to be safe, make sure you have a current disk image before commencing the in-place upgrade repair. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free/paid) + large enough external disk.

Which is what I am doing right now. I have 2 SSD’s, and 5 HHD’s nothing much other than Windows is installed on the Boot drive. I have 10 TB’s of total onboard storage. Plus what is in the cloud.

I noticed when the script was running it reported some missing registry entries,
    Reset done.

All done everything needed was pulled down from the cloud, and from my other drives. JRiver reloading the 5 TB of music and video files.

Ok, does it now update? And just to check, given the number of disks, does only one contain an installed OS?

I have determined that there is nothing wrong with my update software. My definitions for Windows defender are loading up just fine. But KB4530684 will not install. It will download it than the installer will get to 100% when the failure To install error happens. I used the command line and when through a guided tutorial for resetting of the updater which was supposed to clear 0x800f0986. Damn talk about memories of MSDOS command line irritations from the stoned age. It didn’t Clear the problem. The update trouble shooter shows no problems. I had this happen once before when I accidentally enabled advanced windows builds. The installer did work because I was running ahead of the pushed out updates. that is not the case here.

As for the OS. I do have a weirdy. I did a clean install of Windows 10 pro on a new SSD. When I was finished I went into the old Samsung EVO boot drive to copy media files before formatting it. It would not work through my Anker powered USB hub i was forced to plug it directly into the PC. I failed to find it using the device manager and instead booted the computer well the PC tried to boot up using the old boot drive. The BIOS was not set to boot from any USB port. This screwed thing up and I had to reinstall W10’s. What I was left with is this totally corrupt Windows Volume I would love to get rid of it but I haven’t figured out how, trusted installer perhaps? It Is not causing any trouble that I know of. The updater was working just fine until the 10th, and is now except for this one update. I have no idea about the volume numbers. I wonder if I should pull the media file off of the C drive and just load s clean copy. The computer is running just fine however.

My updater is working correctly. The updates for Windows Defender are loading correctly why KB4530684 is not loading, not even manually. I am clueless. My problem is not solved but we will see what happens with the next Update Tuesday. .

The problem is solved the updater is working just fine for some reason KB4640684 will not install. Did a manual install of the 2 of the previous cumulative updates and they installed with out any problem. Will wait for the next Patch Tuesday and see what happens. .

I have exactly the same problem.
After updating an elderly Win7 PC to latest Win10 all appeared to be fine.
But this latest cumulative update will not install correctly - even though it reports having reached 100% before failing.
I have gone through many laborious processes to try and correct this but I am reluctant to actually re-install Win10 completely.
Perhaps it doesn't really matter and will correct itself at some time in the future!
Transmaster - please keep reporting your results with this. Even though thread is marked as solved, it isn't!
