I have noticed that every time windows update detects an update, the only way to know this is to enter in windows update in settings, from the windows 10 settings. Neither in the icons of the notification area in the taskbar, nor in the Action center, no warning appears that updates are available. It is normal?. I think it has always happened to me since I installed windows 10 home (version 1903)
Hi, options are limited in Home, built on the premise that updates would be automatically applied.

Pro has an option to Notify of a pending update via group policy.
For manual control you would need to disable Windows update and use a 3rd party tool.
On my Windows Home, I use Task Scheduler to run VBScript, which will bring up a message when updates are available. No updates will be installed automatically.
