Best Way To Go From 1709 and 1803 To 1809 Without Screwing The Pooch

I use brute force to block updates and I really, really like the way my 2 computers work at the moment. Whatever newfangled "upgrades" MS thinks that they have given the end user during the last couple or more years more than likely I have no use for but there comes a point when even I believe that it is time to move on be that as it may. Besides once I get on 1803 I can stay there for at least a couple or three more years : )

Sooo...what with 1909 imminent and the fact that I seldom do this I seem to have forgotten the best way to go from 1709 and 1803 to ONLY 1809. I realize that this will undoubtedly wreck havoc with personal settings and my penchant for mucking around in the GPE but I believe once I get to 1809 I can find my way back to some resemblance of having the computers perform in the manner that I am currently accustomed to. I really, really do not want to do a clean install with 1809 but rather just keep all existing programs and move up the ladder so to speak. Any advice for slackers on how to go from 1709 and 1803 to 1809 (different machines) with the least amount of pain and risk involved : ) Win 10 Pro. Thanks.

To reduce the risk of 'pain' to that of 'a minor inconvenience', first make a system image with Macrium Reflect Free. Remember to make the Macrium recovery usb too (and test that you can boot from it).

Why 1809? 1903 has been out long enough to be stable, and is now recommended by MS for business deployment. Either way, downloading an ISO from MS, mounting it, then starting an in-place upgrade by running the Setup.exe from the root of the mounted ISO should be the safest way to upgrade. You can still get the 1809 ISO from Microsoft using Option Three in this tutorial.

    Download Windows 10 ISO File

You'd better be quick, once 1909 is released the 1809 ISO may no longer be available.

Only because as of Nov. 1st Woody indicated that he is still using 1809.

Copy that. That's why I am posting last minute today since it has been on my mind for longer than I care to admit.

Once 1909 is released, the choice of ISOs to download using Option Three is likely to be 1903 or 1909 (it's currently 1809 or 1903). Rumour has it that 12th November may be the target release date, hence the need to get in quick.

PS: I take what Woody says with a pinch of salt 1903 is trouble-free on all my machines.

So I all I really have to do is mount it and look for the setup.exe and run as admin and of course turn off my windows update blockers and let it rip and it has been so long it does what kind of shuts down and begins the upgrade process?

The best guide to how an in-place upgrade proceeds is this one:

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Yes, you should undo all your 'blocking' tweaks first. It is also recommended in that tutorial that....

"If you have not already, you will need to disable or uninstall any 3rd party AV or security program you have installed first to prevent it from interfering with the upgrade to Windows 10. You can reinstall it after Windows 10 has finished installing. "

Thanks for the link to "Repair Install..." BTW I am also downloading 1903 as well just because I am fearless : )

Do you do that when you upgrade? I use Bitdefender Total Security and I would prefer not to uninstall it and frankly I don't even know how to temporarily disable it though GOOGLE should be able to help with that or I can just message support. Thanks again for the help.

No, I don't use any 3rd-party AVs. These days Defender is consistently rated a 'Top Product' alongside the rest of the well known names.

well soon Woody may consider upgrading his production machines to 1903 as he seems to like it when he wrote this blog on his web site.
