    Windows 10 update (metered) question

Going on a cruise soon with a wifi package that I don't want chewed up with frigging Microsoft updates. I recently turned on metering for my home wifi connection and have only been connected via wifi. Still in the last day the frigging computer updated 5.61 gb of updates!?!
I've searched high and low for a way to stop updates in the past but so far none of them really work. I've probably tried 5 of what I thought were the best fixes based on user responses.
I seriously can't afford for this thing to try updating on a limited wifi package for a 21 day cruise.
Would appreciate any known working fixes to stop this thing from updating until I want it to update.
    I have Windows 10 Home, v1803.

    Hello Mark,

Option 7 in the tutorial below is a good method of disabling automatic updates to let you update when and which updates you want.

Opinions on this subject differ. The scheme I use works - see my post #73 in Stop Windows 10 Updates Properly and Completely

You'll see other opinions in that very long thread. One of them is the utility Sledgehammer by TenForums user pf100 - Download Sledgehammer (formerly WUMT Wrapper Script) - MajorGeeks

I agree with Denis, you will find many solutions to disable Windows automatic updates. I also used metered for nearly a year and more recently caught an attempt to update while my connection was set to metered. I didn't have the additional items that Denis listed.
I now have WAU installed and it works great. Just review all the settings before you allow yourself to slip into auto-pilot.

I would suggest you make certain that these 3 items are selected at the start. I did get caught once when I had 'Search for both' selected. I thought I was downloading a specific windows update when in fact it also included a driver update that gave me grief.

Great stuff to look through and decide which one works. Tried several promising ones over the past 2 years but somehow those darn updates still happen. At one point I thought I had it fixed by changing the ownership and permissions of the windows\software\download folder and I think it worked for awhile but they started up again.

Personally, I think it's the permissions of the USOClient that make the difference [included in my linked post #73 above].

The WAU Manager looks promising but I didn't see (in the documentation) how it actually works. I know it takes over the updating process instead of the built in windows updating system but does it replace a system file? It just seems odd that you run it once with the settings you want and even after rebooting the updates don't occur... what's stopping the updates from occurring?

The link below can give you more details on how WAU Manager works, but it basically makes policy settings in Windows 10 when configuring WAU Manager.

Yeah, I already looked there but didn't see details on what the software actually does to prevent Windows from updating. I'll look again to see if there are any further details but didn't see it before.
