Updating But Staying With Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.847) Question

My Win 10 Version Pro according to winver is Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.847)

For this bootable partition I want to stay with 1709 but it has had no security updates or any updates for that matter for about a year now.

Looking at the MS catalog I probably want to install first 2019-10 Servicing Stack Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4521860)and then what the Net Framework 4.8 BEFORE or after I install the cumulative update.

I know I need the x64 version of Net Framework but do I need both of these:

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64 (KB4486153)2019-10

Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64 (KB4524097)

and then the Cum.update2019-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4516071)

Do I have that all right? TIA.

I'm on 1809 and I see these:

So those are the ones I'd install. But if you are installing .cab or .msu files you'd need to enable Windows Update service maybe during one or more reboots.

Well, you're welcome to try, but you do understand that the latest updates are only for the Enterprise and Education editions? Those two haven't reached end of support yet. Your x64 Pro and my x86 Pro will not install them. If you try it will say that they are not applicable to your computer.

1709 Pro and Home will not install anything newer than KB4493441, the last CU before they reached end of service on 9 April.2019.

YIKES. I did not realize that. I knew that 1709 had reached end of life some time ago and frankly my spidey sense did tingle somewhat when I saw the updates for 1709 and how recent they were but I dismissed those thoughts rather quickly and went with don't look a gift in the face idiom. Just looking at the title in the catalog like Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64 (KB4486153) for instance did not indicate that these were for Enterprise and Ed. editions only. I suppose if I had dug deeper I would have come across that info. How did you know that? Was it just common sense? I know that I do not want 1903. Are 1803 and 1809 (shout out to @Callender in the above post) both rock solid with no or minimal issues? Thanks.

I use windows update blocker which is more of a brute force approach. Any particular reason you are not using version 2.xxx or is it just a case if it is not broke why fix it. TIA.

Well when updating to 1809 I used Media Creation Tool to install and there were driver issues that needed sorting out. I also apply a lot of tweaks and remove lots of stuff that I don't want and that takes some time.

1809 will reach end of service soon so at that point I will clean install whatever the current version of Windows is.

I don't want to completely block all updates. Just the upgrades so I use methods that allow me to select which updates to install.
So that is why I don't use WUB.

Okay I misunderstood. You are asking about WAU Manger v2

I'm using the version built into UVK rather than the standalone version. I will check for UVK updates.

Well it seems that UVK has not yet been updated to include the new version of WAU Manager.

You may be surprised to learn that MS still issue updates for the original 1507 (10240) but those will only install on the LTSB version (end of service October 14, 2025 according to the Lifecycle Factsheet)

No, I don't use any blockers (except wushowhide to keep Feature Updates at bay). It was a plain un-tinkered install of 1709, just one of the images I keep to hand, I restore these images on my test machine (System Two below) to check the answers to questions like yours.

The good (ish) news, after further testing, is that it's only the Cumulative Updates and the Service Stack updates that are blocked. You can still install the latest .NET Framework, Flash updates and Defender definitions (or rather, in my case I let Windows update do it for me).

I'm quite happy to run 1903 on my other machines, so I'm probably not the best one to ask which (slightly) newer version you should choose

In my opinion they are all about equally stable.

Just a heads up to say that I manually updated WAU Manager by replacing the executable.

Gosh, UVK is again another tool that I had never heard of before. A cursory look seemed to indicate that it might have a moderate learning curve. Does UVK replace something like what I get from real time protection using say Bitdefender which has been my app of choice the last few years.
