    Windows Update not working?

    I'm currently on 1903 (18362.356), updated from 1803 a week ago.

If I go to Windows Update and click on "Check for updates" it whirrs away for around 15 seconds and then informs me that "You're up to date". I would have expected to get KB4517389 and the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool by now.

If I take a look at "Update History" I have quite a lot of Security Intelligence Updates for Windows Defender that have successfully been installed since 1903 was installed (including some today).

So do I have a problem, or am I just being impatient, and I just need to wait a while for KB4517389 etc. to turn up?

    Thanks

Yes, I would have expected you to by now.

What edition of Windows 10 do you have? Home or Pro? If Pro, have you ever set it to defer Feature Updates?

Thanks Bree, that was the problem. I have Pro, and no longer had Defer Feature/Quality Updates available in Settings following the 1903 update. Both were non-zero at the time of the update, so I assume you're referring to the issue in this thread:

Setting update preferences in windows 1903

I've applied the registry fix here:

Setting update preferences in windows 1903

which has allowed me to successfully get the updates, and has restored those options in settings. I assume that if I set either of them to a non-zero value it'll break again? But that it should be OK if I leave them set to zero?

    Thanks again

Yes, that a bug that MS haven't fixed (or acknowledged) yet. That's why I asked if you had Pro. Glad you found the registry fix.

It would appear that the defer settings will still work as described if you set either to a non-zero value, so if you want to use them it's safe to do so. You just won't see them displayed in Settings.

Personally I leave them set to zero. For some control I use gpedit and set 'Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Configure Automatic Updates' to '2 -Notify for download and auto install'.

OK, many thanks. I'll take a look at that.
