    W10 activation on an iMac

    Hi
I know HOW2 find my W10 key on a HP laptop
    KeyFinderInstaller

I have some, simple single lines of code that will list the same value for your Windows 10 Product Key…
W10 Using cmd.exe as an Administrator (copy and paste accordingly).

    wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey >> c:\ProdKey.txt
Creates a text file called ProdKey.txt on your C:\ area.

Next is a PowerShell command, as Administrator...
    (Get-WmiObject -query ‘select * from SoftwareLicensingService’).OA3xOriginalProductKey
but it will run within W10 using cmd.exe as an Administrator.
    powershell (Get-WmiObject -query ‘select * from SoftwareLicensingService’).OA3xOriginalProductKey

    Last, but not least....
    Linux@Lubuntu:~$ sudo cat /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM | strings | tail -n 1

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...d/windows10ISO

But common wisdom is that the Key is stored in the BIOS, so how do I access that after a clean install?

Is the iMac BIOS going to be accessible, and is the W10 KEY actually stored in there?

For a PC supplied with Windows pre-installed by the OEM, from Windows 8 onwards the OEM puts a key in the firmware. That can be read with ShowKeyPlus.

    ShowKeyPlus

There will be no key in the bios. Only a machine with W10 pre-installed by the OEM gets a key burned into its firmware at time of manufacture.

    Hi,
Can't use a activation key off an oem to activate win-10 on a imac.
It belongs to the oem it belongs too h-p/....

You'll need to buy a system builder or retail from ebay cheapest option or from ms directly for the imac.

    Hi

My iMac has had W7 on and W10 on, and still has W10 installed.
However I think the CMOS/RTC is flat, the PC is ten years old.

So reviving it may be at the expense of the W10 install and I don't really want to lose the KEY.

    Therefore I may struggle somewhat.
Currently I can only boot it from DVD, and that is Knoppix, but perhaps in the future I can use USB and try other OS's.

So for now I will close this thread and thank you both for the responses.

The current Windows 10 will have a digital license stored at Microsoft and as long as the machine ID does not change no product key will be required to install and add activate a new Windows 10. If you think the CMOS battery is dead, just replace the battery. I'm not sure what the concern is with replacing the battery.
