    windows updated and now I have no clock on taskbar


    Windows updated on my laptop over the weekend and I lost the clock on the taskbar. Then it came back. Now it's gone again. It's not in the hidden icons. The laptop can also be very slow to boot up now as well. And Chrome browser might not work for ten minutes or so, but Firefox will. Any ideas?

    This suggests you are using build 1803, almost at end of life. Is that correct?

    And have you yet been offered an upgrade to build 1903?

    In case it's relevant, I usually have my laptop set as a metered connection, so there are often large time gaps between updates.

    You would have seen a notification offering you this. Only you know whether you have seen it. If you haven't, it hasn't been offered. So i assume that's the case.

    Could you complete your PC specs please? (See mine for comparison - click My Computers). Tutorial available, tools Speccy, Hwinfo can help a lot.

    Meanwhile please do these basic checks:
    a. Check your disk- e.g. HD Tune (free): Health and Error scan tabs.
    b. If ok, run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command or Powershell prompt. (This scans only).
    c. If ok, please run
    SFC /SCANNOW
    similarly - report the summary result.

    Yes, it is version 1803 and no, I don't recall getting any notification offering anything... unless I assumed it was spam or something dodgy and I binned it without looking properly.

    I've added the specs I could find quickly. Should I hunt up more, eg graphics card?

    Am off to follow the next suggested actions. Shall return :)

    - your computer type says PC/Desktop... unfortunately your laptop model number SVA3KDL0 does not yield useful results.

    Perhaps you could post a URL for its driver download page?

    Roughly how old is it- what OS did it originally come with?

    MS has been offering upgrades for a month or more for people with build 1803- unless they are not compatible.

    It's possible then that you might be experiencing compatibility problems.

    I wouldn't expect these to impact your PC:

    You could try uninstalling this (after doing the checks above):

    Maybe I haven't seen the offer because I'm usually set as a metered connection? Is there somewhere I can go to see if it has been offered, as in a Windows Ten messaging area in my computer somewhere?

    - note it recommends updating the BIOS..

    Before attempting to upgrade:
    - uninstall Avira
    - create a base Windows disk image e.g. Macrium reflect (free) + external storage for disk image files
    (members here continually recommend using disk imaging routinely).

    Yes, you can download any Win 10 iso: the Microsoft Media Creation tool (Google) lets you do that and/or create a bootable Win 10 medium. You only need the iso for upgrading, but you can do certain repair actions with a bootable medium (and use it for upgrading). N.B. you log in, then upgrade.

    The Update Assistant
    Update to Latest Version of Windows 10 using Update Assistant
    - automates and guides you through this, but you don't get an iso or anything to keep for a second attempt or for repairs, which is bad news on restrictive connections.

    Having a metered connection is essentially an unreliable way of blocking Windows updates and upgrades, but may explain why you've not been offered it. There are reports of those with metered connections who have, and MS has stated for a long time that essential updates will be provided even over metered connections.

    You could download a 1903 iso using a different PC and connection, easiest if you use a PC with similar Windows installed.
