windows updated and now I have no clock on taskbar

I turned on my laptop this morning and the clock was back. Chrome was still very slow to open and the laptop was otherwise a little sluggish. I uninstalled Avira and restarted and I still have my clock (yay) and Chrome opened normally (!) and things seem to be working as they used to (woohoo!).

I will still look into updating the BIOS and creating a base disk image (sounds intimidating but a thing I need to learn) and getting the 1903 build.

I will also try not setting my laptop as a metered connection, and see if I can get by on my data-limited satellite internet.

I will mark this thread as solved, and reopen if I hit trouble again.

creating a base disk image (sounds intimidating but a thing I need to learn)

MR base image: Install, plug in large enough external USB disk (e.g.), run, click the button, the relevant partitions should be checked automatically, follow the prompts carefully - there are choices to make which you need to consider.

One is that the job is saved for future use. Name it appropriately so you can identify it easily. Differential imaging is less obvious- you need to find the task in MR's GUI, rt click it and select differential imaging. (Paid version has more options).

To make sure the USB disk is always allocated the same letter, when you insert it, use Disk Management to assign it a letter late in the alphabet- like R or U. Only one drive per letter.

When you upgrade Windows, start again with a new base disk image.

I created a base disk image and saved it onto an external hard drive. I think I did it right (but I didn't do that letter/drive changing thing cos I didn't see dalchina's post till after I'd done it), does it look as it should? If so, my next step will be to update the BIOS.

You should have one large image file in an appropriately named folder on your external disk with a .mring extension if I recall.

If it's been correctly created you can mount it and browse it and so see your files and folders: (this link is from older v5).

Hmm, it doesn't look like I've got one large image file. I'll have a proper look tomorrow and if necessary do it again. cheers :)

Ah, ok, so when I look at my backup via Macrium, it is indeed just one file. I was able to browse it and it looks like all my files are there.

Now just for familiarisation, see if you can see how to start creating a differential image, which you should do periodically until your next upgrade or clean install- real upgrade from MS now expected next year rather than this.

System Clock is missing in Settings > Select which icons appear on the taskbar.
