    Update KB4512941 'Fails'

I have a unbranded desktop PC and a DELL laptop. Both were on build 18362.295. On 1st September both machines were offered updates KB4511555 followed by KB4512941. The DELL laptop updated flawlessly but the desktop PC would only install the first KB4511555. The second update KB4512941 has 'Failed' 4 times to install on the desktop quoting Error: 0x800f0982. I have tried disabling my 'Norton' security program but the update still failed to install. I should add that "Checking for updates" works and downloading them. It is just the install that fails.
My DELL is now build 18362.329 whilst my desktop remains at build 18362.295.

Because it is an 'Optional' update I am not too worried. What does bother me is that Windows 10 does not allow a user to 'Hide' an update so am I now going to be forever offered an update that will not install? Also has anyone else had the same 'Fail' with KB4512941? Any ideas?

I just hope that the next Patch Tuesday updates will fix it.

    Thanks.

Hi, in the News section you can always compare your experience of an update or feature update with that of others as there is a thread per update per build with download links there.

    Cumulative Update KB4512941 Windows 10 v1903 build 18362.329 - Aug. 30

Note the fix at post #17

A search offers this detailed consideration of your error number:
Windows Update ends with error 0x800f0982 / 0x8024200d | Born's Tech and Windows World

Windows 10 does not allow a user to 'Hide' an update
Not true; just not so obvious.

From the Tutorial section which you're free to browse and search

Thanks. I tried the link to "Hide or show...." and ran the wushowhide.diagcab but it only found Microsoft Silverlight. It did not find KB4512941 so I could not hide it.
Looking at the other links it seems some others are also having issues with it but their 'Error' codes are different to mine.
I just hope the next Patch Tuesday WUs fixes it or I can see it becoming a nuisance. As long as it remains an 'Optional' update it will only be a minor nuisance seeing it in my face but unable to hide it. I just hope that MS don't elevate it to 'Important' or 'Critical'.

You can of course download it from the link and attempt to install it.

    This tool
    Download Windows Update MiniTool 20.12.2016
Allows you to check for and optionally hide or install updates- convenient.

(The later incarnation (Sledgehammer) wraps a script around this to disable updates)

The "download from the link" part worked but it failed to install. See screen picture. Update KB4512941 'Fails'-kb4512941-fail.png.

Also tried the MiniTool but this only found the Silverlight update KB4481252 which I was able to hide.

Still unable to install KB4512941 so maybe Microsoft will realise it is a problem and 'pull' the update? I just pray that they do not elevate its importance level.

Whether you see an update or not seems to depend on some algorithm used by MS.

The conclusion to the article I posted above was that to resolve the error probably needs an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data.

    It suggests that this
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10
will not help- although you're free to try it of course.

I would pass on that update since it is optional and just a preview for the next patch Tuesday update intended for "seekers" of early previews.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that next Tuesday's WUs fixes it.

    Thanks for your input.

I, too, noticed that kb4512941 is invisible to wushowhide.diagcab, and I know of no other way to hide patches. Also, after it appears as an "optional" update, it won't be installed, no matter how many times you click "Check for updates" (although other patches may be). It hangs around until you click "Download and install now." If you uninstall it, subsequently clicking "Check for updates" will result in its being immediately downloaded and reinstalled! In other words, once installed, it's no longer optional, no matter how broken it is.
