Is it redundant to tell people to do updates before working on something important or save work before restarting and getting back to it later?

No, there's always someone who doesn't realise how important it is - then complains when they loose their work!

Does anyone even turn on restart notifications?
I always turn it on. As you (will shortly) have Pro, I'd also configure the group policy for 'Configure Automatic Updates' to notify you as well.

I think I'll need to change settings depending on where I am.

I'll have it download automatically and notify for install. But I will change that whenever I'm on a rather poor connection like a hotel.

And whenever there's a rather problematic update, I'll restore with a backup or something and use wushowhide.

Also, how long should I delay feature updates? I like a stable feature update. Is 365 days too much for me?

To make sure that stuff doesn't break, I'll update drivers somewhat often. I'll do it from Lenovo's website (the manufacturer of the laptop might change in the future though).

My preference is to wait until at least the first major update is out after a feature update has been released.
I also keep a watch on the news about it (there's a thread per update per build in the News section here).

But I also have to wait at least a couple of months after release anyway for a program I use to be updated each build anyway.

    Then I upgrade thus:
    Update my disk image
    Download an iso
Uninstall a couple of things that can conflict
Attempt the upgrade using the iso, usually without accepting updates at the time.

    Restart notifications

I never had a forced restart because of an update. I used Win10 since it came out on 2 desktops and a laptop (soon 2) and when I used the laptop I left it quite often on and no forced restarts. It would update when I clicked "update and shut down".

Also, do I need to enable intelligent active hours (if it comes with 1903)? I can be a bit of a night owl on weekends and I use programs and word processors who auto save work. If it doesn't come with 1903, what should I do for that?

    Hello? Anyone?

    Restart notifications

I wonder if restart notifications actually work. I never had an automatic restart on any of the computers I had Windows 10 on, but I'm still worried.

Are there any settings I can change? I will have Pro, so I also need Group Policy settings.

Also, the best thing about Google products are that they autosave to Drive so you can continue your work after an update.

And in VMWare, you can suspend the VM's activity and you can get right back where you left off even after a shutdown! Something I might do before applying updates.

Yes, it does come with 1903. It first appeared in Insider build 18262. 1903 is build 18362.

Turn On or Off Automatically Adjust Active Hours in Windows 10

Even If you leave it turned off, if you burn the midnight oil often enough Windows will notice and suggest you turn it on (that happened to me).

Do I need to periodically check those intelligent active hours?

    - - - Updated - - -

Also, to avoid any update notification jumpscares or something, I will mostly be using the laptop in a well lit room.

I don't know how it will adjust. Normally I will be working from the afternoon to 10 pm or something. But on weekends and holidays, I might be using it all day!
