Check your disk for starters: If you don't like HD Tune then Hard Disk Sentinel (trial)
Just run it and summary on its GUI that is in English. Instant. Even comments on expected life tiem and cables if appropriate.

    Post a screenshot.

[The Health tab on HD Tune = SMART parameters. (If unsure, Google). ]

If your disk has problems, there's no point trying to fix things.

Yes, things like surface scans and chkdsk take some time esp. for big disks and large partitions.

To upgrade, you don't need a boot disk- just the iso file.

The boot disk is for clean installs and tools like Startup Repair and can also be used for upgrades.

Thank you. Below are screen shots from Hard Disk Sentinel, as well as Crystal Disk, which is what I normally use for checking disk health.

I see now about the ISO file now. I can just run it in Windows Explorer and then click on the Setup.exe file inside the ISO file to run it, correct?

At this point I am wondering if I should take any other steps first before running the ISO file and doing the install?

I will of course make a drive image first using Acronis before running it though.

    Thanks again.

Great- and run chkdsk c: /scan as above.

When preparing for the manual upgrade attempt, as above
    Before an upgrade attempt:
Check you have at least 30Gb free on C:
You should disable any 3rd party security software or uninstall it (esp. Comodo). Disconnect any unnecessary devices.
And choose to not receive updates

Note the troubleshooter fixed some things and referred to a network reset - I've not researched that, so it could be you have problems downloaded from MS servers.

If it fails, note the exact error message.

Something you just said about network reset tiggered a thought and perhaps led me to the problem. I also saw that message before, but figured a reboot would do a network reset anyway and had figured the network reset issue wasn't the cause.

Then I just remembered I am on a VPN. So I disabled the VPN, went back into WU, ran it, and then it started downloading the updates.

Now it is installing some more things through WU. I will report back soon after its done adding all the updates and to let you know if I am able to get fully updated from here.

Windows update over a VPN really isn't a great idea. esp. where 4Gb or so is involved, plus the overhead of updates which could be large too.

Thank you. It looks like all is good now after it added a few updates and did a reboot, see below.

Perhaps in the future, if someone else has a WU issue, you can ask if they are running a VPN and/or suggest they turn it off since it seems WU refuses to download certain things if the connection is going over a VPN. This isn't the first time I have had to disable the VPN to access certain things.

Glad it's worked. There are so many reasons for updates and upgrades in particular failing.

First time I've come across this issue or seen reference to a VPN as a failure cause.
My post #7 referred to disabling 3rd party security software - a VPN isn't that, but there's the principle- anything that could interfere.

Now you should create a new base disk image to consolidate your build.

Yes, for me, the VPN wasn't the obvious issue to consider either, but after realizing that it was the problem I remember having issues in the past accessing certain things when on VPN. So it is a good one to keep in mind since many people are using VPNs these days.

Thanks for the thought on the disk image. I probably won't install the 1903 update right away at this point (now that the updating issue has been resolved), but I will definitely make a drive image right before I run it.

Thanks again for all your help.
