Check your disk for starters: If you don't like HD Tune then Hard Disk Sentinel (trial)
Just run it and summary on its GUI that is in English. Instant. Even comments on expected life tiem and cables if appropriate.

If your disk has problems, there's no point trying to fix things.
Yes, things like surface scans and chkdsk take some time esp. for big disks and large partitions.
To upgrade, you don't need a boot disk- just the iso file.
The boot disk is for clean installs and tools like Startup Repair and can also be used for upgrades.
