i have a question about the upgrade pop up notifications

when a windows 10 build is nearing end of life you will start getting pop up notifications in the lower right telling you that you need to restart so that a new build is installed for you and if you keep on dismissing those warnings then you will get a full screen notification asking you to restart

i want to ask what are the services\applications that are responsible for those notifications?

also there are programs like stopupdates10 that disable the windows updates service and the windows updates medic service. if i disable those 2 services using that program before windows updates gets the chance to download the setup files for the build upgrade then windows can never ask me to upgrade and restart because there are no setup files for the build upgrade?

would it be true that windows can never ask me to upgrade and restart because there are no setup files for the build upgrade?
Hi, first, you have Pro, so you do have an option to defer upgrades for up to 365 days. However, there is some debate as to quite how that works in the context of MS delivering upgrades to systems deemed compatible nearing end of life. the following text indicates deferral wins here:

Some editions1 can defer semi-annual feature updates at Settings >Windows Update >Advanced options or via a policy that an organization's management system may provide to the device. On devices that haven't been configured for deferral, you'll need to install the latest feature update to help keep your device secure and have it remain supported by Microsoft. New versions may be automatically installed prior to the end-of-service date of the current version on your device.
    - from the lifecycle sheet - below

Second, this was published on this site some time back:
Stop Windows 10 Updates Properly and Completely
If you use that together with WUMT/Sledgehammer (free) which gives you manual control over updates, you should be able to control this.

In any event, use disk imaging routinely so that you do have the option of recovering to a previous good working state- even if your disk becomes unusable or fails. E.g. Macrium reflect - free.

thanks for your reply. i know that i can delay it for 1 year but that doesnt solve the problem because i still will have that problem after 1 year. also using scripts and wumt seems to be a complicated way to block windows updates. i need something simple. i found Eleven different ways to disable Windows Update in Windows 10 (updated March 2019) - Windows 7 and 10 resources and commentary - Linus Tech Tips and i want to try method 5 which is to use programs like stopupdates10. those programs disable the windows updates services in the registry and they add protection so that the registry changes cannot be undone. that will spoil windows updates. i tested stopupdates10 on another computer and i got an error message when i clicked on check for updates. if the windows update is spoilt then there should be no restart and upgrade notifications. i need confirmation if what i said is true or not

I have searched the forum for you.

Stopudates10 is mentioned in that thread:
Stop Windows 10 Updates Properly and Completely

    but only that once.

    Post #20 here:
Disable win 10 update it re-enabled itself?

Only someone who has used a specific tool can confirm what you are asking.

Perhaps you should consider starting a thread entitled e.g.
Stopupdates10 - does it work for you?

    to get focussed responses.

i tried sledgehammer Download Sledgehammer (formerly WUMT Wrapper Script) - MajorGeeks on a laptop and it started running some scripts when i launched it and it said windows updates is disabled. have you tried sledgehammer and is it good?

also what is the difference between sledgehammer and the old wumt?

I've been able to screen all windows updates using group policy settings and setting my connection to metered. I've never had any popups of any sort, the only place I get notified is after checking for updates and then I get the option to download over a metered connection. I was able to download and install cumulative updates and ignore feature updates.

As far as I know, this has worked flawlessly since I got this MSI laptop and I have yet to be surprised by an update.

I've used option 2 in this tutorial. Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

i know about that group policy thing but the problem is that there is the windows update medic service. that service was added for the sole purpose of reenabling windows updates if the windows updates service is disabled. for example if you disable windows updates in services.msc then after some time passes the windows update medic service will switch the windows updates service back on. if windows updates medic service can ovveride your changes in services.msc then can it override your changes in the group policy?

the problem is that microsoft cheats and they dont play fair

Hmm, Windows as a service.. if you paid for Home, that's what you got. You can argue all you like about whether MS should have offered that without update controls- that's another matter. People update mobile phones all the time, and don't expect failures or their phone to die 'cos of a failed update. MS failing to achieve that seamless update model, and introducing bugs, has been their downfall.

Paying more (or in my case upgrading from a $40 Win 8.1 Pro license when MS was offering those) has been so valuable in giving me control.

I'm not sure you can turn the story of 1809 and other failures into cheating- but poor quality and poor decisions- yes.
