i have pro and i have the group policy editor. if i disable the windows updates in the group policy and i set the internet to metered then will windows always respect that and not force me to upgrade? as i said microsoft cheats and that's the problem and that's why i think more force is needed by using things like sledgehammer

i am using 1809. the end of life of build 1809 is may 2020. when should i disable the windows updates so i dont get forced to upgrade my build? on new year?

i am soooooo lost the group policy is for making windows updates notify you before it downloads an update and it's not for disabling the windows updates

how exactly does that work and how do you ignore the updates that you dont want?

You can defer feature updates as well in group policy, amongst other things.

My understanding- but it may not be reality- is that whichever is the later of the end of life (or shortly prior to it) and the deferral period (if any is set)- will be the point at which an upgrade is delivered.

At present, some 1803 builds are receiving offers of a feature update (upgrade) even though they have a couple of months to end of life. You can read about that in an article near the top of the News section.

Using Sledgehammer, you can scan manually for updates. Using tick box selection you can choose which you want to apply.

It is also possible to 'hide' (as per Win 7 allowed) updates. There's a tutorial about that, and WUMT/Sledgehammer supports that too. That means if you don't want one offered again, you hide it.

These adjustments have worked for me during the past 10 months but there isn't much guarantee it will keep working tomorrow or the day after. Part of my standard operating procedure is to check for updates at least once every day. I have a slow wireless connection and a feature update would be very slow and expensive.

I'm satisfied with the risk, perhaps you require more assurance than I.

I'm hoping that by March 2020, all the surprises that 1903 has provided to some users will have fixes. I'll upgrade then, not before. I'm happy with 1809. YMMV

When I check for updates, I'm told the size of the cumulative or security updates and asked if I want to receive them over a metered connection. So far, it just informs me that a larger feature update is available and asks me to connect to a non-metered connection to receive it. As far as I recall.

i am EXACTLY like you. i am happy with my build 1809 and i dont want to mess it up and i believe that upgrading to 1903 is a risk because i am hearing that there are bugs in 1903 and its luck if everything is fine for you or you get issues

anyway forget about 1903. soon 1909 will be out and it is rumored that it is more stable than 1903. we shall see

i know that you can control what updates you install by setting it to notify in the group policy and by setting the connection to metered. that will always work during the life of a windows build
i forgot to ask you what will happen after the end of life of a windows build? will windows continue to obey you or will it cheat and force the next windows build on you and you are upgraded against your will?
Please see para 2, 3 of my #12, and note
Microsoft now auto updating Windows 10 version 1803 and older to 1903

    Thanks.

i am sorry. i dont understand what you said. i know that microsoft is forcing 1903 on people who have 1803. i want to know can i stop that forcing with group policy or i need to use sledgehammer?
