If I choose to update during active hours do I need to adjust the active times before I start?

Presuming that you mean you wish to perform a manual check for Windows updates, Active Hours is not relevant to such a check. It is only intended to make sure you don't experience a restart to install updates during the period you define.
If a restart is needed, you should get a warning.
