1903 update appears stuck or is it really? Please advise

updating to windows update 1903 on my asus laptop that has win version 1803,

started download on laptop at 12:21PM, is at 99% downloaded at 12:37PM

    12:43PM started installing

at 12:50PM asking for an external storage device to help with installing the update. Inserted my 32GB USB stick

at 13:12PM, it is now at 20%.

    38% at 13:52PM

    at 40% on 16:15PM

    at 53% on 17:34PM

    at 76% on 18:17PM

    at 94% on 18:40PM Finished

    at 18:50PM (pending restart)

started the restart process at 18:51PM

AT 21:06 PM still at "working on updates 0%, don't turn of your pc. This will take a while."

Could it be a lack of disk space? How much free disk space do you need to have for this update? What can or should i do now? Wait?

That is the best plan. As long as there appears to be some disk activity it should (eventually) complete successfully.

Updating through Windows update can be very slow at times, see this thread:

asking for an external storage device to help with installing the update
Unusual. How much free space did you have on C before starting the upgrade?

There are various threads you can read which give users' experiences of upgrading.
In some cases, upgrading can appear to pause for a considerable time, then proceed. Patience.
Feature update to 1903 stuck on download 99%
Windows 10 feature update very slow or stuck

My second PC, however, did not proceed when left overnight, still stuck at the same %ge. Hard reset and on reboot the changes were undone quite quickly. I then elected to use the iso gain, but this time did not accept updates as part of the upgrade. Simple, quick and straightforward.

    If you search for
    1903 stuck at x%

where x is whatever you are experiencing, you may well find more.

Unfortunately I do not see any disk activity through the white light next to my yellow battery light.

I think the amount available is less then 12GB. In total it is only 64GB which kept me going since I bought it on the first of april 2018.

Considering Windows.old will be created (about the size of your Windows folder), I struggle to see how such devices succeed with upgrades.

    See e.g.
32GB laptop - install updates on external drive
and note the various possible ways to save space, and how you might download the iso to an external disk, then mount it and run setup.exe to save using disk space.

You may well have to restart the upgrade in that manner.

Note too that from 1903, 7Gb is reserved for a combination of temp and space for updates.

This is from Microsoft Windows 10 upgrade FAQ:

    Code:
How do I free up space for the upgrade?

Devices with a 32 GB hard drive or older devices with full hard drives might need additional storage space to complete the upgrade. If you don’t have sufficient space, try removing files or apps you no longer need or use Disk Cleanup to free up space. Learn more at Tips to free up drive space on your PC.

During the upgrade, you might be asked to free up space on your device or attach an external drive with sufficient space to continue with the upgrade. If you attach an external drive, make sure to keep it in a safe place after the upgrade in case you need it for recovery options.

.. which interestingly is a little optimistic - it says:

If you don’t have sufficient space, try removing files or apps you no longer need or use Disk Cleanup to free up space. Learn more at Tips to free up drive space on your PC.
.. and in this case it seems:
In total it is only 64GB

Is there a way to ensure the update doesn't occur on my laptop? I force rebooted and it still worked as before the update started. Thank god. I don't have the room for it and thus can't install it. So now I want a way to get rid of the update for good. In other words that it doesn't ask me to update again to 1903.

Its pretty stupid that windows doesn't recognize this and doesn't say that my initial hard drive has not enough room to proceed.

Unless you have W10 Pro no, there is no easy way to prevent it.

But your 1803 is going to reach end of support on November 12, 2019 after which you will get no more security updates. Your best plan is to free up as much space as possible so that you can upgrade successfully. That should be possible on a 64GB drive, the basic windows system will only occupy about 18GB for a 64-bit system, less for 32-bit.

1903 update appears stuck or is it really? Please advise-image.png

I would start by using Disk Clean up to clean up System files, in particular the Windows Update backups. I'd also delete all restore points by turning off System Protection. Those and many other ways to free up space are in this tutorial.

Free Up Drive Space in Windows 10

How much RAM do you have? If it's more than 2GB for a 32-bit Windows or 4GB for a 64-bit system then you can turn off Virtual memory temporarily. Windows can run without it if you don't try to run too many apps at the same time.

You can block all updates thus:
Stop Windows 10 Updates Properly and Completely

If you're using an end of life build, well, beyond Defender and possible driver updates, you would be unlikely to get further updates.

To then check manually, install free WUMT (now Sledgehammer). Good tool - just search for it.

Between the thread I posted and Bree's post you have many ideas for saving space.
