Well I've tried to fix this. Windows update cleanup said it could remove 20 GB of unused files. I waited for hours but it didn't move one bit. So I cancelled it and tried again but it didn't come up this time and my hard drive hasn't decreased in size.

How can I manually locate this 20 GB and delete it?

It can take a very long time, particularly if you haven't cleaned up windows update before.

You must only use the tools Windows provides to clean up the component store. You can run the clean up manually in an elevated command prompt using DISM, but it uses the same processes as Disk Clean up so won't be any quicker. You will get a slightly more detailed progress report though. See Option Two.

I restarted windows and it is now stuck in "Preparing to configure Windows" does that mean it resumed that cleanup task?

Maybe, or it may have restarted the update to 1903. Either way it is best to wait patiently and let it get on with it.

Ok so I followed the method 2 and managed to get a total of 19.7 GB free out of 57.1GB, is that enough free space to try the update again?

Is your Windows 32 or 64 bit? If it's 32 bit then that is probably enough. For 64 bit it may just be enough, you may still be asked for extra storage so have that usb stick handy.

Are you able to temporarily move files to another drive or to the cloud and then perform the upgrade to increase the chances of a successful upgrade?
