Clean install windows 10 after deactivating windows 10 S mode

The tilte says it all. I am getting a new laptop and will deactivate windows 10s Home to Windows 10 Home. After deactivating Windows 10s will I be able to do a format and install a clean copy of windows 10 home since it is supposed to be a one way street to deactivate 10s? Will 10s be totally gone from the system? What about activation after clean install? Will there be any problems there? Thanks for any knowledge on this.

You don't actually deactivate your Windows 10 in S Mode, what you do is switch out of S Mode. When you get the PC turn it on and set it up and make sure that it's activated. Then update the Store app before continuing,, you need an up to date Store to make the switch. Follow the steps in the tutorial below to switch out of S Mode. You'll then have a normal Windows 10 Home which will be activated with a digital license. You are correct, this is a one-way switch.

Once you have normal Windows 10 Home and it says it is activated you are free to do a clean install of Home if you wish. You won't need a key, it should activate from the existing digital license.

Yeah I thought it odd that it has 10s on it too. It is just a very cheap backup laptop for me. I am adding more ram ( 16 Gb) to it and a second sata 3 ssd (has extra slot and all hardware included) to it that I have at home. A good deal on under $400.00 (laptop and ram) if a bit underpowered.. Lol I was hoping I wouldn't have to experiment but I found no answer to that question searching the internet.

Thanks Bree. That is actually what I thought but I love second opinions.Yes I did mean switch. Believe me I have been scouring the internet for an answer to my question. It seems nobody out there has done this or if they have they had no problems. Anyway I will image the system first just in case it goes south but I am pretty certin that it will install normally with no problems. I am going to give it a week or so before I do it to be sure windows is settled in. Someone that left a review on amazon said that they switched out of S mode and it swtched back but I kind of think they just did not change the app install from anywhere setting. Who knows though. Thanks! Going to mark this as solved and when I work up the courage to do it I will post my results here.

Hi I did see those posts but they did not deal with a clean installation of Windows but never the less helpful. I also had read just a few days ago about others not being able to switch but that it was ok now with the update Microsoft did. I am supposing that that was the problem with the poster on Amazon though as that was a post from a little over a week ago.

Hi all, well I got the laptop yesterday and have finished setting it up. I switched out of S mode easily. It did lots of 1809 updates and I noticed the security failure audits were bak in 1809 just like my other laptop. Lol.It did not offer 1903 until I updated the Bios on it. It is updating to (downloading)1903 right now but is stuck for 5 minutes on the 99% mark. Hopefully won't have a problem. I have not gotten the ram for it yet. Maybe tomorrow cause it looks like it is sitting in my post office right now.Ah just got a message pending install. Installing now. Will let you all know how it goes.
