Stuck on Windows 10 1709, can't update. Error code: (0x80070003)

    Hi all

I've been banging my head against the wall trying to update from 1709 to the newer feature updates, but they keep failing.

Windows update keeps trying to install 1803 - it gets about 70% of the way through then gives error 0x80070003 and says the update failed. No more detail than that. I get a similar result with Windows Update Assistant, and the troubleshooter is useless.

I've tried running the DISM and SFC scans, they return no errors, disabling everything running in the background or on startup (including my antivirus software). Same result.

I've also tried directly updating from the ISO files. I couldn't find the ISO for 1803, but I've tried 1809 and 1903, but in both cases, the utility starts up, does some initial checks, and then gives an error 'Sorry, we're having trouble determining if your PC can run Windows 10', which I can't fathom, as I am well above the minimum specs and have over 200 gigs of free hard disk space.

I'm starting to think that a clean install might be my only option, but I'd really rather avoid that if possible as it's a pain reinstalling everything, so I'm posting here in the hope that someone has a bright idea of something else I can try first.

Any help gratefully appreciated. Many thanks.

Hi, have you checked for any BIOS update?

You can download the 1803 iso using the very often cited
    Heidoc iso downloader
That said, 1803 is approaching end of life.

(I keep mentioning it currently- but I don't think it's been added to the tutorial here on downloading iso's although I commented on it as a proposal).

As 1803 is what's offered by Windows Update, it may be that some aspect of your configuration is deemed incompatible with later builds.

As ever, before attempting a major change, ensure you have a current disk image to fall back on e.g. Macrium reflect (free).

    Thanks for the reply.

The BIOS was due an update, but having done so, it hasn't made any difference to the result, unfortunately.

I also tried the 1803 ISO from the Heidoc tool, but I had the same 'Sorry, we're having trouble determining if your PC can run Windows 10' error.

Hi, please look to see if any of these logs are created - check the section appropriate to your failure.

You can zip them and attach them to your post.

That said, it is often next to impossible to deduce much from them.

Please post a full screenshot of your partitions using e.g. Minitool Partition Wizard (not Disk Management) expanding any columns of interest so all text is visible.

See these threads which include examples of cases producing your message indicating configuration issues:

"Sorry, we'''re having trouble determining if your PC can run Windows 10" : windows

Having a clear view of your partitions will probably be significant.

Is your Windows MBR or UEFI? Have you made any partition changes since the last Win 10 installation?

Naturally feel free to research the message and error number.

You can try a clean boot, disable security software, disconnect any unnecessary peripherals, uninstall anything that modifies the GUI, and retry of course. When you do, choose not to accept updates - you can disconnect the internet.

Please check News items on the relevant builds to see if any blocks are listed. (News section). There is an issue with some versions of the Intel Rapid Storage driver, for example.

My windows is MBR. I'm running it on a 500GB Samsung 850 Evo. I did a fresh install of Windows when I upgraded to the SSD a couple of years ago, and haven't made any changes to the partitions since.

The threads you have linked seem to suggest that there is a problem with active partitions that might cause the error? I don't really follow (and messing with them seems dangerous if you're not sure what you're doing), but I've posted the partition screenshot.

I've also posted the error log of the last failed update. I'm not sure how to interpret it.

Thanks once more for your help.

    For info: Active partition:
windows 10 - Which partition to make active? - Super User
Should System Partition Be Active Partition for Normal Boot?

    Try the simple things first:
From an admin command or Powershell prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan
if ok, continue, else similarly run
    chkdsk c: /F
Your PC will need to restart. You can get results thus:
How To Extract The Check Disk (CHKDSK) Logs From Event Viewer on Windows

Noted you've done a SFC scan.

    If ok, continue:
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

Using a 3rd party partition manager, increase the size of the Recovery partition (last on your system disk in your case) to, say, 600Mb.

Try a clean boot, disable security software, disconnect any unnecessary peripherals, uninstall anything that modifies the GUI, and retry of course.
When you do, choose not to accept updates - disconnect the internet just to make sure.

However, I doubt this will change things somehow. And as ever, make sure you have a current disk image before starting.

Please also check carefully for e.g.
    Setuperr.log and Setupact.log from

You can open the folder by typing the path in Run or after showing hidden files and viewing via file explorer.
