Samuria and Superfly: I am not sure KMS means but it seems not a good thing. I wanted a disk to install Windows 10 Home so I downloaded it from Microsoft. It seems Microsoft is getting worse and worse about screwing over their customers. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Why the heck would they want to do this?

Bree so what good does it do to put that Generic Product key in? According to the site you gave, it does NOT activate Windows; I am still in the same situation and soon I am going to lose Windows 10 Home (true or not). Walmart will not give me my money back since it has been so long since I bought it. I seems I am really getting screwed here and seems I would NOT be the only one.

Frustration with Microsoft sets in ONE MORE TIME.

Your original install of Windows would have activated Windows 10 Home and created a digital licence linked to the hardware ID of your PC and stored on the Microsoft activation servers.

Unfortunately, being an early release of Windows it also installed an in-valid generic Home key. If you change that to the correct generic Home key it will activate from your existing digital licence as soon as it contacts the activation servers.

Just curious @huffman.... instead of complaining about Microsoft so much, why don't you just take 10 seconds to change the product key?

Bree one last question. Before making the change it said to disconnect from the internet. Do I really have to do that? I can it is no big deal to unplug pc from the internet.

NavyLCDR I am about to do that. The reason I was bitching was this problem should never have existed.

Where did you read that? The machine will need to connect to the activation servers in order to activate from the digital licence.

    Great news.

You went through this because an old version of the install media used an incorrect generic key (that was the fault of MS, not Wallmart who sold it to you in good faith). Now you have the correct key it should remain activated.

If you run slmgr /dlv now it should say just Licensed with no mention of any expiry time. When you are happy that it will remain activated, mark this thread as Solved to help others in the same situation.

I would advise getting your install media from here in the future.

It sounds like your other download wasn't actually from Microsoft, or it was a very old link?
KMS stands for Key Management Server / Service. Corporations can setup these on site activation servers to activate their Volume License editions of Windows. It's not a preeminent activation and times out if contact with the server cannot be made. In your case its even more weird as Home is not a Volume License edition? You have it sorted now though so thats good.

@Superfly knows more about this than I do and can probably fill in the details. As I understand it the ****H8Q99 generic key for Home was used in error by Microsoft in some early releases of the install media, with the consequences seen in this thread.

Yeah, The OP must have found an image with a (wrong) PID.txt file in it or something, to force a Home install. I used to do that to force a Pro install on my laptop that had a Windows 8 Core OEM embedded key.
